Sirion fuel gauge and MPG

Forum:

Hello, I have just bought a Y reg Sirion 1.3 F Speed automatic. So far, so good! But having done the first tank of fuel when I went to fill-up again I was a bit disappointed to see that it had only done a little over 300 miles on a full (40-litre) tank. However, I could only get 32 litres in it and that was to the brim (and on the forecourt!). Therefore I can only assume that the fuel gauge must be a bit dodgy, as it was showing as very empty. I was also a bit disappointed to see that the MPG was only around 36 (320 miles on 40 litres), but this was probably actually nearer 45 (320 miles on 32 litres) which seems pretty reasonable for an auto.
Has anyone else witnessed this sort of masses-still-left-when-showing-empty fuel gauge problem, and does 45 MPG in a 1.3 auto (90% motorway driving) sound pretty reasonable? Thanks in advance.

Hi, First off welcome to the

Hi,

First off welcome to the mad house. At least BobF isnt asking this on your behalf Wink
Sorry Bob, couldnt resist Smile

Sounds about right. My YRV Turbo is about the same, I find on occassion I come to fill up I get the same results. Besides I probably use more as my Car is basically the YRV F-Speed with the Turbo.
You will never get the predicted miles to the gallon specified by Daihatsu. The YRV Turbo is supposed to do 40MPG but it never does.

'15' Plate SEAT LEON 184 FR TDI. 240BHP/500nm Torque.

Confirmed, All the Daihatsu's

Confirmed, All the Daihatsu's i have owned have had 40 litre size tanks. Yet despite being paranoid a few times that I'm about to run out of fuel , The most I have ever managed to get in is 35-36 litres.

The gauge was real real low I have to say!

So you have done decent enough mileage I would say, especially with it being auto.

One thing I would say if you

One thing I would say if you are a economy freak like me, fit a vacuum gauge.

Its very useful aid to see how much throttle you are applying, and how much you can back off the throttle whilst still maintaining your speed.

My yrv is the same - it hits

My yrv is the same - it hits rock bottom on the fuel gauge before 300 miles I think, but the tank should easily be able to hold enough for over 400! Pretty sure that I have read a review of the yrv that noted that the gauge was very pessimistic. Not a sirion of course but sounds like they are the same!

Interested in the vacuum gauge thing, pocketrocket - how do you use it to work it out? Would the vacuum value from the ecu do the same job (thinking as I have a obdii reader/transmitter and torque installed on my phone)?

Just a incar vacuum gauge you

Just a incar vacuum gauge you can buy, connect the hose from gauge to a vacuum pipe/outlet on the throttle body or plenum. Works exactly same as a Turbo boost gauge which also show vacuum (and boost pressure as well)

Im actually using a boost gauge as i have a few, Although my Cuore has no turbo!

Yes if you have vacuum or map sensor output you can display via OBDII then this will also shows you throttle/load.

More throttle means more fuel injected. Engine revs also affect consumption of course.

Remember with all modern EFi systems, when your foot is off throttle and you are decelerating in gear, No fuel is being injected. Injectors are held closed.

If you have habit of coasting in neutral or clutch down quite early to slow down, some fuel is needed to maintain the idle, So you are actually using more fuel than just decelerating in gear and off throttle, and clutch down at last moment.

Thanks for the feedback so

Thanks for the feedback so far - very prompt! Wink
The Sirion is going to need fuel again soon (currently at about 300 so far on this tank), but I am going to push it up to 350 before I refill and see if it then takes around 35 litres. If my theory is wrong then I have a jerry can in the boot just in case. I will give you an update on Monday. Thanks again.
