Re-mapping

Forum:

Whilst idling the afternoon away as is the wont of us people of leisure, a leaflet dropped through my letter box.

It led me to the website -

http://www.toughworldperformance.com/re-mapping/

There are probably those on the forum who have experience of this sort of thing and would like to comment on the fabulous claims.

Some years ago Trevor Levy, the chap who did work for Daihatsu on the Rallys and the YRV Turbo told me that he'd tried to re-map this ECU and had failed miserably. He said it would slowly drift back to the factory settings!

Hi Tony, Long time and all

Hi Tony,

Long time and all that Wink

Yeah it depends on the electronics and systems in the ECU. For Toyota and Daiahatsu cars with ECUs, I beleive remapping is something that cant be done as the ECU is the type that cant be properly flashed with newer software, might be down to not having a EAPROM perhaps.
Therefore like on my YRV Turbo, you have no other option but to have something called a Piggy Back system. As an example the 2 most used on Jap cars are Unichip and E-Manage.

For Suabru cars only the later models have fully programmable ECU systems, and can be flashed via software to map the car, but these require a software license to do so, but once flashed and programmed they stay that way until they are re-flashed/programmed with fresh software code.

Someone else might give a better explanation, but thats how I understand it Smile

ECU's

That's why they never touched the electrics on the Sirion Rally's, the ECU just reverted back to normal whatever they tried... My Storia X4 was the same, was going to send it to a specialist in Japan to have it completely 're-built', but never got around to it due to cost...

Some cars, like my Alfa Spider 3.2 V6 JTS are ok to rempap, I'm going to have this car remapped soon to improve the throttle response, increase the rev limiter, and take the power up to around 280 bhp. You do need to be careful on what company you use, and what software they use, but the right ones can improve a car from the cost effective 'all round' maps that the manufacturers use.

The best standalone (as opposed to a piggyback) I had was the Apexi Power FC I had on my Starlet turbo, this was a complete exchange ECU with nearly all parameters being modifiable, and my tuner remapped the car to create a superb linear power delivery (difficult with the Blitz turbo I had on there!). Just a shame that with a Daihatsu, you can't play as much... Sad
