Forum:
Hi everyone,
I notice 4wd probs come up a lot on here, and having lost 4wd on my 4trk I've tred a lot of the advice gven for other drivers. I'm almost resigned to getting a new transfer box/ gearbox but was hoping if I told you what I have already checked someone who is more of an expert could confirm suspicions.
I've been stuck in situations a fiat seicento could have got out of- there is no traction in the back of my 4trak (it's modofied into a pick up so you can imagine)
I've selected 4h (button on dash) and 4l (lever) and tried to turn the front prop shaft- it won't turn, the hubs (Auto) could be gone, but I suppose they don't get a chance if the propshaft won't turn?
I've checked the vacuum line from the alternator, when you take it off the transfer box it makes a litle suction noise, so I am convinced the line is OK.
I have changed the 4h switch- even though no light comes on the dash, it makes a clicking sound when pressed which sounds as if it is "doing something" (I can't even remember if the light is always on when 4wd drive is selected, or whether like the turbo light it only comes on when you are actually using the 4wd drive function- fear and shame keeping me firmly ON the road at the moment!)
I Haven't checked the wiring / state of the solenoids on the transfer box yet, I didn't bother because although the 4h switch doesn't work, neither does the 4L lever, so I guessed the lever didn't get involved with the solenoids and it still doesn't work- am hoping to be wrong here though.
AFter all this, the only option seems to be a new gearbox/ transfer box, unless I have missed something here.
Any guidance would be much appreciated,
cheers

Lets not be so
Lets not be so melodramatic.
Vacuum engages 4WD so engaging low range will do nothing as this merely moves a set of gears in the transfer case, if it isn't engaging 4WD.
Check there is power to the switch, it could be as simple as a blown fuse, if there is power to the switch then bridge it out, this will power the actuator. Check for power at the actuator, this will normally click, then check for vacuum, if you heve one or neither then there's your problem.
If you have both then this is fine, move to the solonoids on the gearbox, test for power and vacuum to these, if you have both then it could be these as they are prone to problems. To check, remove the vacuum pipe going to the transfer case, if it has vacuum then the solonoids could be fine.
Remove the vacuum pipe at the gearbox end and check for vacuum, if you have it it should be fine, the problem is the plunger.
Where the vacuum pipe enters the transfer case you should see a switch, this is the 4WD switch, remove it and test it using a multimeter and pushing the plunger, if this is fine then remove the three studs holding the cover plate on in which this switch sits.
It can be difficult to remove so lever it evenly to remove it as it is a close fit, inside you will see a large plunger.
This has a bolt in the centre which hits the switch, pull this forwards, if it comes easily it is free, more often it will be full of muck and with this forwards it is engaging 4WD. clean this if it dirty and lubricate with a little engine oil, then pull it forwards and push it backwards until it is free.
Jack the vehicle so all four wheels are off the floor, push the plunger backwards and try to turn the front propshaft, it should turn freely, pull the plunger forwards and hold it, turn the rear prop and the front should be turning also, this proves 4WD is working, if the front prop dosen't turn when you turn the rear prop its an internal issue and new transfer case.
wicked, thanks assassin. I'll
wicked, thanks assassin. I'll get on the case with your suggestions and let you know

if you think the T box is at
if you think the T box is at fault, ditch it, buy a manual lever transfer box and all problems will go away, goodbye electrics, farewell vacuum pipes, honestly....electrics on 4wd vehicles slung underneath the chassis, what a joke, water/weather + electrical components = most breakdowns in the world, if its electricall it will fail.
