Return to Daihatsu

Forum:

Hi All,

After a disasterous year with a Smart City Coupe (rebuilt engine, new turbo and alternator, air con pipe replaced etc etc I have decided to look at the Copen ( my original choice had been a Smart Roadster but they all leak and destroy the SAM unit at £1000 a time as well as soaking the inside of the car permanently).

Any problems in the leak department or anything else I should look out for.

PS My last car was a Rally2 which was 100% reliable over a year and which I lost just £300 over that time.

Thanks

The Copen was something I was

The Copen was something I was considering for the summer, and was even contemplating shopping in my Scooby for one. When I was doing the research on these there are indeed 2 engine types:

2003-2006 you can get a 668cc turbo engine. Servicing is an issue with these with a short 6 month 6000 mile intervals, or to be safe every 3000 miles due to how hard the engine has to work. In Japan they still have this engine in the Copen.

2006-2010 the engine changed to the 1.3 K3-VE engine and a hike in power from 64bhp of the 668cc engine to 84Bhp which is the same power output as the standard 1.3 YRV but in a lighter chassis. Servicing is every 12 months or 9,000 miles.

Things to look out for are the rear arches were prone to rusting badly due to the arches being rolled as standard.
Everything else would be the same as what you would normally find on a Daihatsu. Brakes are the same as the YRV Turbo at 246mm so bigger than the Rally II.

So when you come back and we have another local meet up, will you be showing up this time? Was a little bit disappointed last time you said you were going to make one and the. Didn't turn up and went quiet. Sad
