These vans have a diagnostic
These vans have a diagnostic mode built into the ECU itself so you may find if the warning light is on then you can easily get the fault code off the ECU.
Also, if your not getting any engine warning light at all when you turn the key on them you have complete power failure to the whole system. This is most commonly caused by the power cable on the battery terminal in the boot. On the battery live terminal there is two little wires that connect via a connector block and they always go all horrible and dry like some kind of weird corrosion or electrolysis. Simply fix this and 9 out of 10 hijet come back to life perfectly!
If you still have problems with an error code go to this page here:-

Which will tell you how to make the ecu go into diagnostic mode and what the flash codes mean.

Although possible, I'd be very surprised if it was ECU.
It's such a common thing for mechanics to easily blame but it rarely is.
Denso ECU's are very well made and reliable units, In 20 years of having various Charade GTti's, I am yet to come across a faulty unit, even ECU's stored in damp garages or shed's for years have worked just fine when plugged in the car and tested.
Many people have paid silly money over the years for replacement ECU's when it has made no difference to curing the fault.
Having said all that, If you can get one for only a few pounds off ebay then may as well go for it, Just don't be too hopeful it will be the cure.
