Forum:
I have an old carburettor type engine in a newer body shell. The problem I have is that the engine air filters are getting harder to find. Does anybody know if there is a conversion that can be done so that I can use the newer(and more available) filter?
It might be easier to find
It might be easier to find another car with a similar filter that will fit or be easier to adapt for. I think the carb engine has a completely different induction system to the EFI. Good luck
If you contact filter
If you contact filter manufacturers, or go onto their websites technical page you will find the dimensions and specifications, from this you can find a filter of the same size and shape.
As an example: your engine is a Toyota and fitted to a number of cars and commercial vehicles so finding one shouldn't be too difficult.
As an example my F20 is 32 years old, its original oil filter was discontinued so i checked the dimensions and found Skoda oil filters were only 1mm longer and exactly the same dimensions in all other areas so it ran on them for many years and they were cheaper from Skoda dealers them motor factors, so I bought a quantity and got an additional discount. My air filter was a round one and I found a Hyundai one which fitted except this was 2mm higher so I screwed the metal housing lid down a little tighter. Fuel filter wise I fitted an inline fuel injection filter from a BMW as they are all the same across all 3 and 5 series models, so cheap, and being much larger than the original, and with a much finer filtration paper it gave better filtration.
