Hi New Here, 1998 Hijet 993cc need some advice/ help.

Forum:

Hi, I just recently bought a 98' Hijet 993cc and well she has her little problems. I am of course looking to get her back to full working order plus modifications Smile

Ok to start with, I have a bit of mechanical knowledge, took and passed my mechanics certifications when I was 16 (8 years ago) in the United States, well to say the least cars a re a bit different here.

Down to the Hijet, things I have noticed thus far... Temperature rises only while idle, didn't hear the fan cut on at all. Heater does not blow hot air at all, more than likely needs system bleeding my guess, Heater selector does not work to change from the face vents to the window or anything else. Rear wiper does not work neither does the rear wiper fluid squirt. Installed cd player has no power, cigarette lighter has no power, and both sliding door exterior handles do not work...

Does anyone know or seen any of these before to help with some advice as where to look first??

Much appreciate any help, am in love with my Hijet and only owned it for a day so far lol...

EDIT: Spent some time with her today and bled the coolant system, but after seeing the interior engine pipe and color of fluid I will be cleaning and flushing the system soon. After bleeding this the heater did not work still, but the temperature never rose above half. Still no idea about the electric fan. Whilst looking down into the engine on the drivers side I noticed an "added" fuse that seems to be just a jumper wire with fuse going to a yellow plug. Didn't look into this much either. While down there noticed a wire that was apparently going to the added cd player was not connected to the Cigarette lighter. It was the ground, hooked it up and that now works. WHILST I was there... lol I noticed a dangling metal arm, happened to play around with it and recognized the sound of the shutter for the dash/window vent. Put the heater on and flicked the arm up and HEYYY heater works, but now only on the window and the feet. Will source into re-attaching that soon. Then decided to play around with the powerless cd player, noticed a wire in the loom was loose and she came on as well, but then noticed it was hooked up to constant 12v and not ACC so wouldn't turn off. Within a couple minutes sourced the ACC wire hooked her up and she was golden as well!! Didn't get to look into the rear wiper or anything else. Quite a successful hour or two if I may say so myself.

If anyone would like to add any thoughts to anything I am open to any suggestions or the like. Will be adding pictures soon of the little beast as she is and then pictures as I do different things to her. I am known to be the tinkering kind and will be modifying the Hijet quite a bit. Smile

Hello

Hi and welcome to your typical Hijet ownership. Sounds like you are working your way through the typical symptoms of neglect. Door handles break up because the sliding door bearing runners fail making them stiff to slide thus the handles fall off. These are standard bearings available from any decent engineering shop. Heater selector is another common problem, and often caused because the plastic arms break. They never had an official stereo wiring harness, so all sorts of bodges take place, which it seems like your solving.

Rear wiper jet is pumped from a bottle under the passenger seat. 2x10mm bolts remove the whole bottle including pumps for testing and inspection, then the hose take a long route through the bodyshell which may be kinked. Test the pump first as they are cheap and dodgy, especially the wiring connectors at the bottom. There is a pipe joiner between the tailgate and the chassis on the drivers side next to the hinge. That could be worth parting to check for flow.

Rear wiper is pretty easy to test for fault by removing rear tail gate cover if it hasn't fallen off already. From memory one wire goes live at the press of the switch, the other is a permanent ground. The wiring comes from behind the rear passenger side light cluster, up to the top through the pillar, then into the tailgate through the rubber sleeve thing. If your not getting a live at the motor check the switch as they are cheap'n'crap'n'daihatsu. There is no relay or anything, so after that check fuses.

Hmmmmm, now overheating/coolant/no heaters.... where do you start? If its full of rad weld gunk in the coolant its had problems for a while. So you need to really get on top of it. I wrote this guide for 1.3 vans, which yours is different. http://www.daihatsuhijet.co.uk/hijet-overheating-problems-head-gasket-or-not/ The rad it different, but it might be worth a look. The pipe with the rad cap in it rots, and a guy on the hijet forum had a new one made out of brass.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply HighlyJetted, will update and edit post as I search for problems. Smile On another note, is there any upgrades I should know about? Like engine mods, exhaust systems and wheels, home made rear speaker mounts for above/ right behind your heads?? Thanks again.

New seats really help the

New seats really help the ride, the original ones are un-supportive saggy cheap things. Smart car seats fit in them really well.

Wheels are a pain in the arse as the hijet had PCD4x110 which is very rare. Often people force ford wheels or peugeot wheels on which are pcd4x108 which bends the studs and could cause a serious accident if they break.

If you look through that website I've posted its got loads of stuff about wheels and stuff.

You can also fit a 1.6 engine out of a sportrak into a 1300cc hijet. Not worth doing it to a 993cc as you'd need the 1.3 gearbox, wiring loom, manifolds, mounts etc etc.

993cc is from the CB family of engine. 1300cc is from the H series of engine.

Standard Exhaust systems are pretty hard to find, so easiest to get a custom stainless made up. But you won't notice any power difference really.

Best modification you can do to a hijet is stop the bloody thing from overheating!!!!

Hi, thanks for the follow up

Hi, thanks for the follow up comment. As it stands now, the overheating seems to be fixed. But I will be replacing parts to keep it tip top shape. Also, is there anything about alternator upgrades, or different higher output alternators that fit? Will be looking to install a couple larger batteries just to cover the juice for a small stereo system, cold starting and all precautionary voltage use. Will definitely browse the website you posted. This weekend I will probably get my hands in it again Smile

Alternator

You may find you can use an alternator from a sportrak or a terrios or something. I found that the pulleys had different diameters, so that alone will boost your charge rate. No promises on how the conversion would roll as its not something I've messed with.

What did you do to fix the coolant system, and what sort of testing have you done on it - out of interest.... I like to hear everyones experiences on overheating hijets to help myself and others to get sorted in the future.

Have you drove it hard up some hills and in heavy traffic, and done the warm up, cool down cycle a load of times over a few weeks? I draw a line on the header tank bottle with a pencil to maintain a record.
