YRV Using Oil

Forum:

Evening!

I've had a 51 plate YRV 1.3 for just over a year and it's been using oil faster than I'd expect since I did the first oil change. It's gotten progressively worse and now it's using a lot of oil (not sure exactly how much as I've been using the car less lately but talking litres per thousand miles). There are no obvious major leaks and it's definitely burning some. I've moved from 5w 30 to 10w 40 and it's made no noticeable difference. I don't know what was in it originally, but I put 5w 30 in on the first oil change.

The car had 52k on the clock when I bought it... Somewhere around 75k now. Other than a return of o2 sensor error in the last few weeks (intermittently on and off) I'm not noticing anything problematic with the car. It's been suggested to me that it might be valve seals - just looking for a bit of advice on what might be the likely cause and how to find out (without spending a lot of money stripping the engine!).

Thanks!

Won't be valve seals,

Won't be valve seals, Everyone says it's those but it never is.

More than likely the oil control rings on the pistons have gummed up from cheap oil or lack of routine servicing over the years.

So you will need to get a quality engine oil flush such as Forte, and run engine at tickover for 20 mins or so. (follow the exact intructions on the can)

Then change oil / filter, use 5w 30.

Then keep changing it every few hundred miles, And maybe do another flush.

Basically do lots of oil changes to clean the engine up internally, and it should come good again.

My Cuore was burning a little oil when I first had it, at 51k miles I knew there coudl not be much wrong with it or hard stem seals, Now after a good few oil changes it burns none!

Thanks for that. When I first

Thanks for that. When I first noticed this my partner's father did suggest forte, but I couldn't see where to buy it locally. I'll source some of that online and do as you suggest - hopefully that will help! Is there any need to change the filter each time if I'm doing really frequent changes like that?
