Foamy Radiator

Forum:

Hi everyone new to the forum and this is my first post...

Hopeing someone can help with this...

Basically i brought my first sportrak about 6 weeks ago as a bit of a project been sprayed matt black, uprated suspension, wheels & tyres etc spent ages doing work on it had it MOT'd and taxed and use as daily driver.. LOVE IT!! by far my favourite car to date...

But now problems Sad for about 2 weeks its been overheating continuosly ive flushed rad and replace with all new coolant, no different checked it for leaks etc no luck one day at work me and college were having a look around it when we decide to open up radiator cap while running to find exhaust gas coming through straight away head gasket... Sad being a little short on cash and time i decided as the was no water in the oil or oil in the water id try a quick fix of some k seal... this seemed to work no more bubbles or smeel of exhaust gas Smile but then two day later on the way to work all off sudden the thing went off the gage on temp and blew cap off of the overflow tank had it recovered home and asked garage to take a look as i was feeling a bit defeated... i told them symptons and work id carried out so they said they do some checks ran 15psi of pressure through system and said held pressure couldnt find any leaks anywhere... he then put a die into cooling mixture which is suppose to change coulour when reacting with exhaust gases to show head gone but it didnt so they were satidfied my k seal idea had worked at least for now... so i took it up the road and again it overheated..

should of metioned early its fine when around town only overheats when crusing anything over 3000rpm and when overheating my heater only blows stone cold but in and around town very hot... so they said drop thermostat out see how you get on...

today ive done that once out i tested it in pot on the stove it is stamped as 84 degrees celcious operating temp but didnt open till the water was boiling away so i guess it probably was the reason behind my troubles... started my car up and went down the road no problems this time other than seriously high idle...

when i got back i popped of rad cap and it was full of foam like huge amounts of it... so confused as i always belived this is a sure sign of head gasket failure???

i dont loose any coolant what so ever so should i worry any advice??

and apologies for lengthy post and porr speeling etc

what thermostat have you got?

what thermostat have you got? it must be a genuine long reach stat on a sportrak, also when filling with water always squeeze pipes to get out air locks as that creates over heating, check the fan is cutting in properly at heat, you should really be able to hear it spinning at high temps, you could get a compression test done on each cylinder see whether that brings alight an issue.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Thermostat

hi thanks for the reply... to be honest im not really sure as to whether or not it is the long type that the vehicle requires i have nothing to compare it to but have heard this can be a problem ive ordered a new one from milneroffroad as recommended through the forum so hopefully that sorts that and yeah i thougt about the cylinder compression test but the mechanic at my local garage assures me there no exhaust gas in coolant so hoping it is just a case of air locked in the system guess i could try and bleed air out again... tried to be thorough when i changed th coolant but worth a try...

as for the fan ive read a few posts regarding the type of fan installed and how it should function but unfortunatley im not very familiar with this type of fan so not sure what to look for regarding operation efficiency all i can tell you is that it spins continously from start up lol

Try these.

1. Is the cooland pump working?
When cold remove the rad cap. Rev the engine. The coolant level should rise up the radiators filler. If no rise then the pump is probably dead.
2. Themostat as described. Do not overtighten the nuts. %lb max or they snap off. Fit with the thermostst jiggle [hole in its plate] uppermost. This allows trapped air to escape.
3. Flush the engine. Take off an engine hose and connect to a garden hose. remove rad cap. Flush.
4. Problem with cylinder head.

thanks

Thanks for reply have an update today put thermostat back in car once refitted topped up coolant and started car it idled at around 2000rpm before eventually dropping to 1100-1500 bouncing between the two as if i was sat there blipping the trottle ??? not sure how this has happend new problem altogether and shortly after i discovered exhaust gas in the rad again Sad so defo gotta change that Sad bad times
