YRV '03 Auto - A whole host of rattling problems

Forum:

Bought this apparently mint YRV from a local used car dealer about a week ago after paying a premium for the low mileage (30,000) and the fact they've included a warranty. However, I'm seriously considering giving it back (or at least trying to) due to a whole bunch of rattling noises generated by the interior at low speed. These are mostly interior related.

1.) Glove box door area
2.) Rear left passenger door area
3.) Boot plastics (don't know what yet)

Where we live the roads are not exactly in good order but I have owned tin cans before and the vibrations and rattling noises this car generates during a simple school run are pretty noticeable and annoying.

I've checked all of the above areas and not a single panel or covering is loose in anyway. Everything is sitting perfectly with no screws missing. I removed all the easily removable boot plastics but the noise persists. If I hold the glove box in really well the vibration stops but it's not what I would call loose by any stretch of the imagination, it has no play in it whatsoever and all screws are in place. The tyre pressures are good and the car has just had an MOT with nothing reported and the handling OK for a car of this build.

So, am I just overly sensitive to rattling sounds or does this car have a major engine/body resonance issue!

Quirks of a 10 year old car...

If it makes you feel any better, my YRV Turbo has some rattles here and there.
Things to check. Even though the panels are all in place, are all the clips in place? The problem I find with the YRV panels are the clips. The rear boot panels are the worst was you think its in place but find that some clips may have fallen out due to work that has taken place in the past.
As for the glovebox, not really had any issues with this, but I do have an awful lot of stuff inside my glove box, so guessing this is putting weight on the lid to stop it rattling.
Things to try. See if you cannot get some type of sticky foamy pads to stick in certain areas around to the panels and glovebox as this will help.
And don't forget Japanese cars of this era weren't known for great build quality Wink

Just to add for the rear door rattle. Sounds like some clips have snapped or gone missing as mine doesn't make any rattles here. To check the door panel you need to remove the panel. To do this there will be 3 gaps under the door panel at the bottom. Each one of these should have a clip in place. If some or none have clips then this is the issue.
