Hi
Has anyone re-registered their 4track for agricultural purposes only, if so does anyone know what mileage you can do on road and what insurance cover is necessary and MoT. Mine has just passed the MoT with flying colours but we've now got a X-Trail for economy and comfort (my partner is having a number of operations and has to travel to hospital a lot), we'd like to keep the fourtrak for use on the croft and for geting hay and food for the animals. Would we be able to use the fourtrak for this if it was registered for agricultural purposes only?
Thanks for any replies in advance.
For agricultural use you are
For agricultural use you are limited to a 25 mile radius if memory still serves, and they haven't changed the law.
Basically you can travel up to 25 miles as the crow flies from the outer extremities of the property, or in simple terms 25 miles from the nearest property boundary as the crow flies. You can travel as many times as you like as long as you stay within the 25 miles.
Re-registering a Fourtrak
The Fourtrak would need a minimum of third party insurance for a start. It would probably require an MOT as well, plus a Vehicle excise licence at whatever rate. Whilst tractors, for instance, are MOT and 'road tax' free, the same concessions wouldn't be available for your Fourtrak, mainly because it is capable of travelling at a speed greater than the maximum specified for agricultural vehicles.
If you do not intend using the vehicle on public roads, you would not need to re-register it, or tax, insure, and MOT it. Just declare it SORN, which is what it says, a statutory OFF ROAD notification.
To sum it up, either keep the vehicle fully road legal (as backup), or just as a farm vehicle. Although with the latter, it would be advisable to have insurance against theft and fire.
