Timing chain exposed K3-VET

This K3-VET engine had an unknown rattle, not heard it running but assume its the timing chain?
Few pics showing the various parts, note pic4 with the screwdriver showing some chain slack.
Pic5 shows a load of sludge build up, it oused out when i removed the cover, almost like raw crude it was that thick . Looks like the DVVT unit throws oil there. The plunger tensioner could fail due to the small 3 hole gasket leaking?

Some good research going on here Dave. So I take it that if anyone wanting to change this chain would have the room to manoeuvre to do it in the engine bay? Or would it be an actual engine out job in your opinion?

A thousand words

Yes a picture is worth a thousand words for sure. I am fascinated by these pics because I have never seen a Daihatsu chain in the real. Top job for posting this.

That sludge is NASTY and I am curious about the oil change cycle of this particular car. The caramelised look on the metal faces and the sludge is certainly indicative of either the wrong oil being used, or much extended oil drain periods. Or in fact both. It isn’t surprising there was problem.

Yeh, engine oil isn’t just a lubricant anymore, it is also used in a ‘hydraulic’ sense to operate valve timing adjuster mechanisms so keeping the engine oil clean is super paramount. It will continue to lubricate well past its best but the small ports used for the ‘hydraulic’ aspects will be suffering mightily.

I have recently swapped to Mobil One New Life 0w-40. I used Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 Full Synthetic (which is a very good oil) previously but I have access to some Mobil at a good price so I gave it a go and I am happy to report the car is fine, and it really does use less petrol with the Mobil – the engine genuinely feels more free to spin. Also Mobil One is famous for its cleansing qualities, which was a big draw for me. I don’t want my motor looking like a toffee.

I recall you (or someone) saying in another post that the chain was quite a colossal looking thing and it is for sure. Those linkages look very tough.
