YRV Turbo:Speedometer lights changes from green to red during high revs?

Forum:

Hi guys,

I just came across an article about YRV 130 that says the lights on the speedometer changes from green to red when its rev up to 7000rpm. Is that true coz in Malaysia, our lights remain the same red/amber colour across the rev range. Can somebody verify this caused i find it really amusing that they have such features in UK and not Malaysia.

Below is the link that says so:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-reviews/15504/daihatsu-yrv-turbo-130

Thanks

Yes, but its 2 LEDs that light up in the trip o-metre LCD

Yes the YRV turbo 130 here in the U.K have what's been described as shift lights.
The speedo clocks were modified with a small black box with 2 wires soldered to the rev counter and 2 hidden shift LED lights in the LCD part where the trip computer is. UK clocks are slightly different to Japanese clocks, as ours have to have both readings for MPH and KPH. In the U.K we drive in MPH, but if we decided to drive on the European contenant or in the Republic of Ireland then it's KPH.
The first was a green LED when you hit around 5,500 - 6000 rpm to signify when to start to change gear. The second was an amber/red when it got to 6,500rpm to say you had reached max rpm for the power. The rev counter goes past this easily, but as you know the max power band of any turbo car, unless remapped is in this range. Anything after the 6,500rpm and you are just getting noise.
The rev lights were a special Modification as we're the red stitched leather steering wheel and auto lever for the UK market.

Is the small black box that you mentioned attached the back of the speedometer? Really appreciate if you can enlighten me with a photo of how the black box looks like.

Attached is the link i saw on ebay. It is a Copen speedometer and it has a black box attached at the back of the panel. Is that the black box that you are referring to?

The speedometer that i bought does not comes with any black box attached to it but it has MPH and KPH readings. Is there anyway i can upload the photos of the back of my speedometer here for you to see?

Umm. That speedometer is off

Umm. That speedometer is off an auto Copen model. In the UK we didn't get this model officially imported for sale by Daihatsu UK. That black box on the back of that speedo is not the same as the YRV one. Looks like something connects on the back of that black box as well. Could be a slight modification for the auto box ECU. As the common speedo for the Copen are usually for manual cars.
The black box on the rear of the YRV speedo clocks is a definite aftermarket fit piece as its held on by a sticky pad and you can see the wires going off behind the white plastic backing. When I get chance will take a photo and post up.

Is the black box a standard feature on all YRVs in UK?
The YRV speedometer that i bought from UK did not come with that black box and i was puzzled when i read that it has a shifting lights. All the YRV engines that we get in Malaysia comes from Japan and does not have such feature. I was wondering is there any way that i can get this meter with shift lights for my car. By the way, just 1 quick question, lets say if i bought this YRV meter with black box attached and install it on my car, does that mean that i get to see the shift light as well or do i need any special modification in order to activate it?

I just joined this website 2 days ago, i m still wondering how can i upload the pics here, just like what u did with the meter. Mind to teach me?

Thanks

The black box on the back was

The black box on the back was only fitted to the UK version of the YRV Turbo. The story goes that Daihatsu UK employed a 3rd party company called Camspeed (Jump in here BobF if I have got this wrong)who did modifications to the Sirion (Turned 1.3 SL Sirions into Rally II and IV) and the YRV Turbo.
On the YRV Turbo the following has been altered/modified for the UK market;

- Y-Shaped Exhaust pipe (2 x outlets), which a portion of the rear bumper on the left handside was cut out to accommodate.
- Rear anti-roll Bar
- Leather steering wheel with red stitching (As well as autoleaver)
- Black box added with 2 LEDS for Rev counter to come on when revs hist 5,000/5500 and 6000/6500.
- Different suspension springs

The speedos you may have could be off the other automatic YRV called the F-Speed, which had none of the above done.
I have now replaced my YRV Turbo clocks with some Sirion F-Speed clocks (As they are a silver white background), and therefore have now gained a clock in the LCD portion where the 2 x LEDS would have been, and there was no black box.

The Speedo clocks as far as I am aware are a standard plug and play. The black box on the back of the standard YRV Turbo clocks is wired to take a reading off the rev counter and then produce the LEDs. So yes should work.
If you want some sort of shift lights then why not look into one for your ODB-II connector perhaps?
For pictures I have uploaded, I have a photobucket account and then upload my pictures to that site. All you do then is copy and paste the '[IMG]' place holder part and the website brings in the pictures for you. Smile

Thanks for the clarification,

Does that mean in UK there's 2 version of YRV, 1 known as YRV 130 and the other version known as YRV F-Speed?

My meter was a manual meter. The difference is that it doesn't have a black box. I like the concept of having a shift light build into the meter, it looks really cool. Did you managed to record a video of it??? In Malaysia, we have never heard of a YRV speedo clock with shift lights build-in. This is something very rare in Malaysia. It will be great if i can get 1 of these.

Any idea where can the YRV speedo clock with shift lightsin UK?

I have attached a link in Facebook which has the pic of my speedo clock but i m not sure if you can access it or not.

Yes. Here in the UK we have

Yes. Here in the UK we have following YRV Models:

Manual gear (M201G) 2 wheel drive versions:

Radical, Premium & LUX

Manual gear 4 wheel drive (M211G) versions:

4-Trak

Auto Versions (2 Wheel drive only (M201G)):

F-Speed and Turbo 130 (Both have same Speedo clocks except Turbo got the modifications as previously discussed, plus the jazzy Turbo 130 Side decals)

The F-Speed is a 1.3 Litre 16V 84Bhp K3-VE engine (Same as the standard YRV 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive versions) . Where as the Turbo 103 is a 1.3 16V 127Bhp (De-tuned for the UK Market due to UK standard 95 Octane fuel? as they are rated @ 140Bhp in Japan due to 100 Octane fuel) with the K3-VET engine.

You are not missing anything with the shift lights, as they are not that spectacular. If you want to get hold of the speedos from the UK then your best bet is to try Ebay.co.uk as there are a couple on there being scrapped:

Thank you very much for the

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation.

Now that i finally understand the variants of YRV available in UK. The fact is we don't even have YRVs in Malaysia. Hence we purchased the engine from breakers (we call it halfcut in Malaysia) and install it in our car.

Detuned to 127bhp because of RON95? We are using RON95 in Malaysia as well but my car was producing 160whp on a Dynojet with 205Nm of torque. Not many people in Malaysia uses RON97 because it is considered as premium fuel. The fact is we don't even have RON98 in Malaysia.

Anyway, thank you for your enlightenment

Cheers

GBP100 for a speedo clock?

Hi jpor,

I referred to the link that you shared. They charged me GBP100 for the TRV Turbo speedo clock. Is that a normal price cause i thought the price will be around GBP35-45 per clock. Thanks

Rare Car here in the UK

Hi, Not sure on prices I'm afraid.
In the UK the YRV Turbo was only imported in limited quantities as it wasn't a big seller. The rumour from International Motors/Daihatsu UK was that only 210 YRV Turbos came into the UK. As these were not big sellers here.
Don't forget you are also asking the seller to export the item from the UK to where you live. Plus Ebay isn't the cheapest for selling items, as the seller will have to pay ebay sellers fees, plus UK Value Added Tax is set at 20% so maybe why the price?
Not sure where else you will be able to get this item from to make it cheaper for you.

To reply to your earlier post about power output from 95RON fuel. Something I forgot to add is that the UK has to abide by European vehicle laws in terms of exhaust gases. So it could be another reason why our YRV Turbos are lower power, plus we have the 2 x Lambda/O2 variant of the ECU, so we have a Lambda/O2 sensor before and after the manifold (Exhaust) to monitor CO2 gasses. All UK and European cars are taxed on how much of these gasses are produced.

Where else can i find?

Tq,

So, YRV Turbo can be considered as a rare item in UK? I just know that. Thanks for the info. I actually requested the seller to post the speedo to my friend who is currently living in London. GBP100 was the price quoted. I almost dropped off my chair.

Now i m doomed thinking of getting a piece of this limited edition speedo at a more raasonable price. GBP100 is too high for me. lol.

Yes, indeed i did noticed that YRV in UK and other European countries has 2 Lambda sensors hehe.

I would try patch2spots or

I would try patch2spots or also known as Phil. That's who I bought my Sirion clocks from. And you do realise that these also do not have the rev lights you wanted. As the black box was not put on.

No prob with no shiftlights

Tqvm for the info

I m fine without the shift lights caused i can't afford the YRV Turbo meter which is GBP100. The Sirion F-Speed speedo is good enough for me hehe.

Thanks again
