Forum:
I recently had a problem with my '96 EFI Sportrak which was causing it to stall sometimes while idling and also to have much less power. This has since been fixed and it no longer stalls, however the power is not back to what it used to be. I know the Sportrak is not a quick vehicle and I initially thought I had just forgotten how slow it was after having been away from home. All I heard from the garage was that they'd adjusted something to do with the engine idle.
To test this I drove it up hills that I know it can just make in a certain gear. This confirmed that there is definitely something different.
It seems less responsive and probably about 20-25% down on power, most noticeable in the region where the Sportrak is normally worst anyway: below about 2200rpm, but I'd say it affects all of the rev range.
The fuel filter was changed only a few thousand miles ago (allbeit a cheap replacement) air, oil filter, oil, plugs have also all been changed recently. The distributor cap was also just replaced (I thought this might be causing the original problems)
There is a possibility the engine is running slightly cold, because my temperature gauge is out, but this has been a problem since well before the power loss.
Thank you in advance for any help,
Tully
Fault test
I've performed the basic fault check (which reads data via the check engine light flashing) but this gave a response as 'normal'.
Thanks
Pull the spark plugs and
Pull the spark plugs and check for colour, if it indicates running rich then its most likely the temperature sensor as these are a common problem, then replace it.
Check the airflow meter is clean and if it is the swinging arm type make sure it turns freely and is not binding.
Check and clean the wiring, particularly at the plugs as they are exposed here, and the ignition amplifier to body connection as any corrosion will hamper its operation, or just run an earth wire from its body to a good earth to confirm it may be an issue.
Check the timing as it may be out.
Thermostat
The thermostat could be stuck in open or partially open position. You will both burn fuel and have a drop in power.
After a few miles check if the radiator is very hot or just cool. Switch off engine. No need to remove the rad cap, just put your hand down the radiators fins. There should be a significant heat different between the top and bottom of the radiator.
Sportrak power loss
Hi, I suggest you get your local garage to check your engine compressions, as your problem sounds like valve trouble to me.I have had the same problem with mine, Two new exhaust valves and its been no problem since.
