2004 HiJet Pickup Truck Speedo Cable

Forum:

Hi,

My speedo cable snapped and triggered the amber warning light.

Can anyone help with where to get a replacement cable and tips on how to get the old one out please.

Petrol engine, manual gearbox.

Thanks.

Nippy

Pickup cable is the same as

Pickup cable is the same as the van cable.

Remove the clocks which is really easy - just pull the trim off from the inside with your fingers, then there are 4 screws holding the clocks in. The cable goes down behind the carpet in the left hand corner of the driver side footwell, then along the chassis to the gearbox.

It's a pretty easy job to change.

I have a spare one on my parts van in the garden if you need one.

But before I make any big promises I'll have to take it off to inspect it.

Yes please Highlyjetted, I do

Yes please Highlyjetted, I do want yours if it's OK. Thank you.

Thanks for the detailed advice.

While I have the clocks open I will try to change the bulbs. I can hardly see the instruments at night.

Thanks again, I will wait to hear from you.

Please check your email. I

Please check your email. I have send you my address.

I followed your advice and disconnected the cable from the clock and the clips and ties along the chassis but where it disappears out of sight near the back end of the front wheelarch it will not pull through.
There is no movement at all from one side to the other.
At this point, there is a collection of pipes, tubes, cables and wires.

Did you have the same problem removing yours? If so, how did you get over the problem?

I mentioned the dim panel lights. For the benefit of others, the bulbs were fine but there are 3 green plastic caps inside the instrument panel and these had blackened from the heat of the bulbs. I broke away the charred remains and just left the bulbs bare. I can now see the dials at night ( legally ).

the speedo cable goes right

the speedo cable goes right behind the vertical metal brace between your feet. It goes through the floor in a big rubber grommet which you have to pop out of the bodywork.

I did what you said and got

I did what you said and got both ends of the cable dangling on the road but I can't get it free because it goes along the chassis and disappears out of site somewhere near the sump cover, Does all that have to come off aswell?

If you look under the airbox

If you look under the airbox there are some tags that hold it to the chassis. Roughly there are about 5 tags in total, all of them are 10mm bolts. I think some are accessable from under the drivers seat - but don't quote me as the van I took it off has a lot of stuff already removed.

Brilliant. I didn't think of

Brilliant. I didn't think of trying to access it from the drivers seat. I've been rolling around on the road underneath the darn thing. I will try that tomorrow. Can I remind you to email me the photos to identify the ends of the cable. Thanks.
