Why won't it start!!

Forum:

Scratch one-s head My '97 Sportrak came with 2 keys when i purchased it from a garage a week or so ago: 1 entirely metal one and 1 with a plastic bit on the end with the Daihatsu emblem on it.
Here is the confusing bit:
I have started it perfectly fine with both keys once before but now it refuses to start with the metal only one. It just turns over and (eventually!) fires up, then the engine immediately shuts down. It will continue to do this however many times i try to start it!
If i take out the metal key, put the plastic-end one in and turn it, it starts up the way it's meant to and runs completely normally. I think it may be an immobiliser as it does have a high-tech-ish aftermarket alarm fitted with some motion sensors on it but it could well be some issue in the engine bay.
However I do not know so does anyone have any ideas what is going on here?! Scratch one-s head

It has a chip in the key,

It has a chip in the key, technically it shouldn't start with the key without the chip, so suspect immobiliser has been tampered with.

It is a useless clone.

Assasin is correct. You have a 'legal' key and a 'clone' which has no chip. The clone key is useless since it is not recognised by your set up.
If you lose the 'legal' key you will not get the engine to start/run. Obviously someone lost the spare and thought a clone would be OK. You need to get a specialist to 'clone with chip' a spare key.

I'll try not to lose the key then!

OK, thanks guys I'll just be very careful with where i leave the chipped key from now on! Biggrin

Prefer a pre '94 ELXi though, Old ones are better built.

Alot of cars with

Alot of cars with immobilisers that have no chip in them will quite often make the car fire then kill it after a few seconds, to get a chip is easy, go to a high street key cutters/locksmith they will pull out the original transponder chip, read it then code another one for your spare key, fairly cheap too, unlike modern keyfobs that require you to talk to an ecu via diagnostics as they have a transmitter for radio for central locking and transponder chip for immobiliser.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
