Diesel Engine Timing

Forum:

Hi guys new to the forum,
Just got a F75 with a DL 2.8l turbo diesel. Ive pulled the timing cover off the timing gears to check over the timing as it would not start.
Am hoping someone maybe able to advise on the correct timing mark alignment the manual I have shows a belt not timing gears so I'm a little lost...

You have the earlier NA

You have the earlier NA engine version thats why no belt and if its all spinning correctly when turning the starter I'd leave it alone and look elsewhere for non starting issue, for instance have you checked for fuel getting to the injectors? no fuel, no bang bang.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

I had checked all the fuel,

I had checked all the fuel, you are right about the fuel not getting to the injectors, have the fuel getting to the injector pump and nothing getting to the injectors hence why I pulled the timing cover off. Thought the belt may have broken and as a result the pump wasnt being turned. Anyway saw the gears and couldnt figure out the timing.
Any thoughts on the injector pump not working/pumping the fuel?

Thanks,

Chopsy

yup, look on the pump, fuel

yup, look on the pump, fuel stop solonoid, thats the only mechanism that stops these engines from running, probably a bad earth.

Thanks for the tip checked

Thanks for the tip checked the fuel stop solenoid can hear it clicking when the ignition is turned on.
not too sure where im going to go from here.
Thanks for your help

Thanks,

Chopsy

if you've got fuel going into

if you've got fuel going into the injectorpump, the fuel stop solonoid is deffo working, everything is turning as it should but no fuel going to an injector on the piston.....then you need the injector pump looked at im afraid, I personally though would take that solonoid off and double check it, yes you can hear it click but its worth having a look because a pump overhaul is a fair few. ££££$$$$

You have a point ill get on

You have a point ill get on to taking the solenoid out tomorrow and let you know how I go.
Thanks again

Thanks,

did you definitely check that

did you definitely check that theres a good flow of fuel from the filter first? pumped the primer on top of the housing making sure it flows into the pump?

Yeah theres flow to the

Yeah theres flow to the filter not sure if you would say its good or not. Im not sure what kind of pressure is ment to be there or the flow rate at the moment its kinda pours out of the hose if you remove it from the filter. wont be able to work on the car till the weekend have a feeling the problem maybe with the fuel pump under performing since everything has checked out on the injection pump

Thanks,

Chopsy

it wont be the fuel pump at

it wont be the fuel pump at fault, that I can garentee, try that hand pump on top of the filter, in that housing is a one way valve and along with that and the injection pump thats what siphons up the fuel from the tank.

Got the solonoid out gave it

Got the solonoid out gave it a test works well. Have been starting to think weather the fuel pump its self isnt keeping the pressure up. do you know what kind of pressure the pump is ment to be pumping at?

Thanks,

Chopsy

Air in the lines?

I would be surprised if it was the pump also. Is there any air in the lines between the pump and injectors? Maybe try disconnect the fuel lines to the injectors and crank the engine to see if fuel is flowing out the lines?
