High and Low idling issue

Forum:

When starting my '97 Sportrak in the mornings it idles fine at around 1100rpm, i believe this is pretty much normal when its cold but after a few seconds it creeps up to just over 2000rpm for a while and then slowly goes down to about 1000rpm when its warmer. After some driving though and when stopping it goes as low as 600rpm.
Have i got some issues with the engine? if so, what are they?

Yes, and the first port of

Yes, and the first port of call is the temperature sensor and its wiring, these are a common problem and this is a temperature controlled thermal resistor (thermistor) and it controls all the engines management functions. By being a temperature controlled variable resistor it suggests it is fine when cold, but as the engine warms its giving the wrong resistance reading to the ECU and telling the ECU the wrong engine temperature, and the rest of the system is compensating.
