2005 Charade - Bad idle when cold

Forum:

Hi guys, got a new (kind of) problem with my Charade. I say new, the problem has been there ocassionally in the 3 years I have had the car, but in the last month or two has happened everytime.

When the car is cold, idle starts at about 1500-1600 RPM as normal. After a few seconds though, the revs drop right down to 700-800. It stays like that for a second or two running roughly, then sputters a couple of times and revs back up to 1500. Then drops back, revs up, and repeats this until it has warmed up. Can be interesting getting off the drive/out of the street if you catch it when it's dropping.

It does mainly get used for short runs, the car has only done 15400 miles. I do give it longer runs sometimes, which I feel like makes it run better in normal circumstances but this problem remains. I don't have a warning light, but I have hooked it up to the diagnostics anyway and don't see any faults. The car just passed MOT on Tuesday with great emissions readings, and I gave it a good run before the test, and as I say it runs fine otherwise.

Car is a 2005 Charade with the 1.0 EJ-VE. Thanks.

Secondly (Don't wish to sound snotty here Wink ), can I ask what you have tried and if you keep the car serviced? Only reason for asking is we see a lot of these posts and in instances like this we don't get the full picture if anything has been tried/the car is kept serviced properly.

So for example:

- Your car is serviced as per the schedule? I.e oil is changed etc..
- You have inspected things like the spark plugs and coil packs?

I know you have tried a Diag computer. So we know this has been ruled out. My only other thoughts on this is it could be a sensor that's failing or fouled up that the ECU hasn't picked up on yet, or the MAP sensor is having issues with a lean setup or even the airfilter is at fault somehow (Has this been replaced/checked?). As you have the EJ-VE engine this will also have the DVVT (Dynamic Variable Valve Timing), so could be a the DVVT filter?
Worth getting hold of a manual off BobF to have a look at the engine schemtics.

Hope this helps?

Maybe worth getting hold of a manual for your car

Hi jpor, The only things I

Hi jpor,

The only things I have tried so far are checking the things I can get to easily, and giving it a couple of good runs. The car is serviced, and everything appears to be ok there. Oil is very very clean (but will be changed soon), Plugs are good, Air Filter is almost new, the coil packs as far as I know are original. I have checked and cleaned the sensor in the Airbox, but not the DVVT filter, hadn't thought of that.

I have already got the engine manuals off BobF, and I have been looking for ages to try and get the Charade specific workshop manual, but unfortunately I haven't found one yet.

I will check out the DVVT filter, thanks very much for your help.
