4 wheel drive

This may sound a bit daft but nether had one off these before.
Just got my sportrak how do you engage 4 wheel drive i know you move the gear stick int 4 wheel drive but there is a knob on the wheel saying lock/unlock do i have to lock it every time i want to use 4 wheel drive or will it do it automaticly

I hope your right they dount breakdown but bloody hell they rot all down the drivers side chassi but theres plenty off room.

Sorry for the delay. It's a quiet forum - which I can only assume is because Daihatsus don't break very often...

You DO need to operate the manual hubs when you want 4x4. You can leave them in Lock if you think you'll be switching from two to four wheel drive a fair bit - ie if there's snow about. Don't use four-wheel drive on tarmac as you'll damage the transmission. The locking hubs allow you to unlock them from the driveshafts, so saving a bit on wear and efficiency.
