Gearbox knocking in 5th

Forum:

Hi All. I have changed the clutch on my F78. Bugger to get the gearbox back in but I finally did it. Whilst the driveshafts were off I started the Machine and tried out the clutch. In 1st gear, fantastic, it ticks over nicely and the clutch works well. To be sure I checked all the gears. What I've found is that as I change up a slight knocking noise get louder and louder. By the time I get to 5th its really bad and i'm worried i'm doing damage to the box. If i rev the engine, however, the noise disappears until i let it back down to tick over. I've also noticed that sometimes the knocking is quieter for some clutch presses than other?! I am really perplexed by this. Have I damaged the spigot bearing or driveshaft? Got a new fault in the gearbox? Or must I have the drive shafts back on to provide load to the gearbox? Also, if the box has lost a tooth, is it possible to buy individual cogs? The box seemed fine before i changed the clutch. But that was with the drive shafts on and its difficult to tick over in 5th anyway. Any ideas or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

gear noise.

Its just the backlash in the gears , when you put a load on it it will be fine. What is happening is that tiny levels of unevenness in the idle are causing the gears to chatter. Thats why the noise goes away when you rev it up.
