Rust on chassis spreading

Forum:

Hi all, long time no see [about 8 years!]

I had to have some welding done on the underside of my 04 Terios last year for the MOT, was told it was a patch up and would need future work. Prior to this year's, the mechanic came round and basically said we were throwing money away to keep getting it fixed, rust is spreading and needs specialist equipment, will cost many hundreds [£500 approx], but we are fighting a losing battle. I trust this mechanic not to string me along, he is a personal friend of my OH who has nothing to gain by telling me porkies. OH won't justify paying the money [I'm not working at the moment]. I really can't bear the thought of not having my little car, he has been so good to me over the years, mileage is around 50k, no other issues as far as I know, and I'm gutted. He's SORN at the moment and I'm refusing to get rid of him.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what I could do next?

Thanks if you have any advice.

Cheers, Jonah

Sportrak sills

Does anyone know if there is anyone supplying replacement sill for Sportraks?
I am aware Milner 4x4 have them for Fourtraks, but they tell me they cannot be adapted to fit a Sportrak. Mine is a 1992 efi model in fantastic condition with the exception of the rear of the driver side and both inner rear wheel arches. Thanks.

Rust

Sorry to here that Jonah sadly daihatsu use extra thin steel for the body panels on their cars.

Sounds like your mechanic is suggesting you need to remove complete panels, which is costly as the car has to go on a jig to keep the chassis alignment.

Mini beast, it is possible to get panels from daihatsu, not cheap though. If Bob chimes in he might be able to put you in contact with his contact in the far East who can get parts cheaper.

Chassis rust

Thank you for your reply, Vinnystoolbox. Other than that he is in great shape, I've been told lack of use might have contributed to underside rust build up, as I don't do a lot of miles. I am gutted, it looks like I will have to get a replacement car.

Sportrak sill

Many thanks for that.
Yes I'd be keen to know of a supplier and costs. With my Saab 96 restoration I've joined a few others in need of panels etc and had one shipment to supply us all to keep costs as low as poss. Any body else interested?
