New to Fourtrak ownership, anything you experiened owners can tell me to be wary of ??

Forum:

Hello fellow Fourtrakers.

I'm new to this forum having recently bought a 1993 2.8 TD Fourtrak to use when I go shooting and ferreting, it's the Limited version with the bells and whistles (more things to go wrong Scratch one-s head ).

Unfortunately I'm already becoming obsessed with the darn thing, it's such fun to drive on or off road.

Reason for the post apart from to say hello is to ask if any of you can tell me what to look out for problems wise.

Thanks for reading my posting, hope I don't have to wash my mouth out with soap yet Wink

Re: what to be wary of?

So, what to be wary of Unknw
Buying one of the damn things in the first place !!!!!!!!!!!!! Wink
Ok, have to own up, this isn't Tiff, its his girlfriend.
And they are a lot of fun, especially offroading.
Think its just ours always needing something doing to it.
I'm sure someone will be along to give you a helpful answer soon, it will probably be Bundyrumandcoke, he's a star, helped us loads !
Happy traking ! Smile

Hey this is some forum, first

Hey this is some forum, first reply I get is from someones girlfriend !!! My girlfriend is a lot of fun offroading as well BiggrinBiggrin

Seriously though thanks for the reply Tiffs girl, very welcoming.

Bet there is one question you can answer for me.....where the eck is the headlamp height adjusting knob (on the Fourtrak not the girlfriend)

Rockys (Fourtraks) aren't so sophisticated as to have headlight adjusting knobs. Your gonna have to do a little bit of work. Look around the headlight, at the front, behind the grill. You should see a couple of screws, with long springs behind them. One on top or bottom, and one on one side. These are the headlight adjustment screws. Its the one on top, or bottom that you want. Screw it in or out to adjust the headlight up or down. A little bit of lubricant on the screw thread before adjusting makes life a bit easier. There may be a gap between the headlight and the grill to get a screwdriver in, or else remove the grill to make life easier.

Assuming its a diesel you have bought. Internal cleanliness is next to godliness with them. Oil change every 5000km (3000 mile), oil filter every 10000km (6000 mile) Air cleaner element needs constant monitoring to make sure its still clean (tip, look out for one model of Toyota Hilux filter, Same size except 1mm shorter, Half the price of a Daihatsu element here in Oz) Fuel filters, try to fit a generic brand fuel filter with a water trap, CAV here in Oz, between the tank and the original filter. Replacement is heaps cheaper than an original one. I actually run two of these between the tank and the original fuel filter.
Mrs Tiff, AWWWWW shucks, Im not really a star, just an ordinary bloke trying to help others.

Cheers
David

Thanks for all the info, I'm

Thanks for all the info, I'm off to get some engine oil, the car came with new spare filter and PAS belt so will check all that at same time. Radiator water looks a bit rusty so will have to drain and refill with fresh antifreeze.

Strange about the headlight adjuster as it mentions it in the handbook ??? They really are handy things, got one on my Peugeot estate and makes it easy to adjust beam height while on the road.

My Fourtrak is the TDX version so maybe it's something they fit to them ?. Not obviously trying to cast doubt on your wisdom.

Just washed the mud off from last off road foray, mental note: take it down the car wash next time as the road outside my house is a right mess now !!!. Annoying thing is I've got my own pressure washer and the ones at the petrol station always stop when you've washed about 3/4 of the darn vehicle.

Ok Paul, Yours is a 93. Most

Ok Paul, Yours is a 93. Most of my experience is with mid 80's so there may have been changes. As well, there would be some differences for the different markets, Oz and UK.
And before changing coolant, check this. You may have an oil cooler, chrome disk about 4 inch x 1 1/2 inch, located below the oil filter beneath the turbo. Check the coolant hose that comes from the rear of the motor into the cooler. Remove the hose from the engine block, and probe into the fitting to see if it is clear. This is close to the lowest part of the water jacket, and sludge and rust can gather there, blocking the coolant hose. Also, give the block a good flush while this hose is disconnected.

Thanks for that sport, will c

Thanks for that sport, will check it all out while I'm doing it. Waiting for a manual in CD form to arrive then I'll pitch into the jobs I've got planned. This vehicle seems to have had regular new front brake pads, looking at the spare set that came with it they don't look very big for such a large vehicle. Are the Fourtraks a bit under braked at the front ?, is there a worthwhile recognised conversion ?.

Planning to do oil and coolant change, front pads (may skim or change discs at same time if badly worn) check levels in gearbox and transfer box. Fit headlight adjusting knob BiggrinBiggrinBiggrinBiggrin

You may be surprised to hear that it's raining again here so may not start on it today!!.

another new 4traker!

i also recently purchased a 4trak, speaking from my own experience i can say:

front brake lines - in the arch area are quite vurenable.. check after off-roading.. as i found they can be damaged resulting in brake failure on the way home Smile lol

arches, pop out one of the rear ashtrays/porn mag holder and look around the inside of the arch. mine are getting a bit scabby and will want some attention soon. Sad

brake lines - as with any vehicle, check for corrosion, clean up and grease down.. they will be far better for it

rear door seal - with the weight of the spare wheel and over time.. the hinges an drop leaving a small gap at the top of the door.. =leeks

wiring - where the main loom goes underneath the passengerside.. it tucks under the rear whel arch, check for wear of the wires, repair/protect as necessary

peat bogs - are very deep, slimy, smelly and not great for driving over..!

keep it clean and lubed up, and you should be fine

Rocky 4 track

Agree with clean filters however you can get generic fuel/oil/air ones in OZ - I get mine from truckbits Australia at Dandenong so I assume they are available in the UK. Check the hand fuel primer pump works before changing the fuel filter cause if it don't then you will have trouble. Never let the diesel run out as it stresses the high pressure fuel pump ie no lubrication.
Keep a check on the oil level in the transfer case as it can drain into the gearbox (just like Toyota Land cruisers) causing failure of the gears in the top of the transfer case.
The later DL motors have a timing belt that needs regular replacing - the earlier ones had timing gears and I like them better.
Have done over 500,000 kms in my 1984 F75 DX Rocky over the last 20 years. Bought a 1984 EX for my wife 4 years ago so they cannot be to bad.
