Malfunction Indicator Light/Engine Warning

Forum:

Hi all,

Hope you're well.

Few weeks ago was out giving my girlfriend a driving lesson and the MIL came on- initially solid and then blinking. Called breakdown cover who came out, reset the warning light with their OBD and followed me home. Light came back on during journey home so they advised I take it to a garage... Which I did- a local independent.

They said it needed all new spark plugs and 1 of the pencil coils was warn. So paid them to replace those items. Go to pick car up and on drive home the light illuminates once more- flashing. Call the garage and they say we should replace the other two pencil coils, so I pay them to do that. Driving home and the light starts flashing again. Call garage who say they will ask their mate with a more glorious obd to plug into the car and see what he can find out and surprise surprise heard nothing since. They did however suggest I try disconnecting the battery, leaving it an hour or two then reconnecting. Did that and reset the light again (I have my own basic obd) drove round the block and the light came on again.

Took it to a chain auto centre today who did some more diagnostics- plugged in their OBD but said they struggled to get much information. They tried telling the obd it was a Peugeot and some other brands to see if it would carry out the analysis on that basis as they weren't having much joy running the diagnostic programme on the programme for a Daihatsu. He checked spark plugs and pencil.coils to ensure previous garage had installed correctly, which they had. He checked the compression what ever that is and it was 12 bar across. He checked the timing chain and it was too slack (he showed me and it did seem to be too slack) he quoted me £600 plus to replace . Other thing he suggested is that it could be a miscommunication with the ECU and a component .

Interestingly , the day the light came on my telematics box had been remotely disconnected- could this possibly have caused some electrical fault?

Any how I'm getting frustrated now so would be so grateful if any one has any ideas as currently no-one knows what it is and I've already put loads of money into the car and don't want to waste any more on a lost cause.

Many thanks in advance

Ross
