Forum:
i have started to get a "clonk" when changing gears but only after about 10 miles driving, seems to be on drive take up.
tried pumping grease into propshaft grease nipples but the ones onthe cv joints didnt seem to want to take any.
can anyone help on this? or am i looking in the wrong area? my machine is a 94 fourtrak with 54000 on- had it 2 years and apart from a bit of play on a front wheel bearing am pleased with it.
many thanks ....bill
After ten miles? Sounds like
After ten miles? Sounds like the time it would take for the gear oil in the diff, transmission or transfer case to get warm, and maybe thin out?
A small wire brush and solvent can help clean the grease nipples, and pushing the little ball bearing with a small screwdriver can sometimes help get grease to go in. The nipples can be replaced, but soak them with WD-40 and be gentle, they break easily.
While you're under there, try rotating the prop shaft with the transmission both in and out of gear to see if you can hear whether the clonking is coming from the prop shaft, rear diff, transmission or transfer case. I assume you're in two wheel drive, so you should be able to ignore the front end entirely. If you jack up the rear axle so both rear wheels are off the ground, try rotating one wheel in each direction while someone holds the other wheel to find a worn differential or axle shaft splines.
Of course, it could be the clutch, but I would think that would make noise from the start, not after ten miles.
clunk clik evry trip.....well the clunk anyway!

I have similar with clunking from the rear diff on my 1990 f75 ! uj's are fine but bit of play in prop.....so.....worn diff and axle splines...big and expensive job???
Havent checked oil levels in rear diff yet tho, and nut hasnt been off in years so will check that out too.
Blimey.....this all seems never ending! wanted a fourtrak for years...get one......and wish i had bought a horse! ha!
