yes,I am about to buy a 1992 feroza for 500 euros for my birthday next week and I dont know whether I am making the right choice.the body of the feroza is in perfect condition, but the cluch cable is gone so I dont know what she is like on the road.there is also no power steering pump in her.she has only 97000 miles on the clock, but there is no d.o.e. on her either.could someone tell me what the feul consumption is like, wheither I need a power steering pump or not and if you think it is a good buy.

'Only' 97,000 miles? Sounds like it will be a project.

If you have a good source for used spare parts and have the facilities and knowlege to work on it yourself, it just might be a pleasant project. If not, it will be a money pit.

Unless the steering gear has been replaced with a differnt type, you need a power steering pump.

The missing clutch cable isn't a good sign either. It sounds like someone tried to fix it, gave up (or found a major problem) and slapped it back together without all the bits to sell it off.

You might try investing in a clutch cable to allow you to go for a test drive and check out the steering, suspension and gears.

4x4s are fairly complex machines and are often neglected and abused, so take a good look at it.

I have had my Sportrak for two months and have already spent more money fixing it than it cost to buy...

I am not to sure about the major problem.the person I am buying the jeep off said that the cluch cable broke on him when he was driving it home.I know for a fact that she has not seen much off-road use.he only used it to go shooting in and that is about it.I had a good look at the jeep myself.I got a my uncle who is a diesel mechanic to look at her.he said that the engine might'nt be that good but I don't think so.I live in Ireland and there is nowhere that you can really go OFF-ROAD except with the farmers who have their own fields.I am only just got my provisional license so I would'nt want better shocks or bigger wheels or anything like that.I will bear what you said in mind when I get this jeep.the only thing that worries me is that when I buy this jeep, that she will be no good and I will have just waisted my money.

before you get started...

one word for you.. insurance, think they are a group 8 and you say you`ve only just got your provisional?!

...the insurers will mostly try and take you soul in exchange for cover, get a few quotes before you even think about buying it!

also it sounds like it could be money burner, never take to heart anything the seller says, hes selling it so hes hardly goin to say that its wrecked is he now?!....would you really consider buying a car that you cant even take for a test drive?

be careful Wink

new drivers license and sporty owner

Unless you have bags of cash laying around i would avoid buying that sporty for sure, if you have that amount of money to spend on it (and it will be a small fortune) just look around and buy one thats in better condition, i made the mistake of buying the first car i saw and three months later ended up having to scrap it at cost to me again then buy another car! Although i was really lucky and my sister gave me her sporty for free!!! the insurance cost me £900 tpft! and it was only cos i got the sporty for free that i decided to pay it. Now ive had it for just a month, i've given it some tlc and found a leak on the radiator, the steering pump is on its way out, it has some electrical gremlins, the brakes need adjusting, and various other bits and bobs that are probably going to add up to much more than i could sell it for! dont ever buy the first thing you see, and really think about it dont buy on impulse or your first sporty will only be something you regret:(

insurance

yes i just got my provisional license but I found a loop hole.if i take out the back seats I can get commerical insurance which is a lot less than private insurance.also I am going to get my father to insure the feroza and I will become a name driver on the insurance.this way my insurance won't be that much.what do ye think?

Insurance

Hi there,

I passed my test while I was still 17, and drove my mums car until I was 19, with no accidents, etc, and then I bought my Sportrak (1995 model) nearly 2 years ago. 3rd Party fire and theft was £1,400.

Be very careful if you use your dads name. I was going to do that, but the insurance company said because there were 3 people in the family with driving licences and 3 vehicles (i.e - my Sporty being classed as my dads second vehicle) they wouldn't insure me on it unless it was in my name!!

And remember if you tell one ins. co. one thing, it gets put on a central database and compared what you say to another company!!

Not sure about commercial insurance - i thought there were other restictions, such as minimum weights/payloads, etc.

Good luck to you tho, keep us posted.

Regards,
Nat

insurance

I really haven't thought of the insurance part of this investment.but i just could'nt pass up this bargin.I bought the jeep for 450 euros on friday.I got it saturday and I am cleaning it myself.anyway,I was talking to a friend who has a renault 19 car and he converted it into a van.he had to take out the seatbelts, the seats and he had to cover the well where a back seat passenger put their seat.the customs and exise were out with him to make sure he converted it properly.my friend told me that if i just take the seats out and the seatbelts out and then get a piece of M.D.F. and cover the back.then I will be alright.but i am not sure wheither it will be worth it or not,but if it is worth the bother well then I would be prepared to keep the jeep for a good while.what do ye think?
