1991 daihatsu rocky reverse problem

Forum:

hey, i have a 1991 daihatsu rocky (manual) and it is in great condition and never gives me any problems, the other day i drove it and then came home and parked. then when i went and got in it i went to put it into reverse but it wont go into it. it acts like somthing is blocking it from being put into reverse, i tried for about 5 minutes and finally it went in (or so i thought) so i was like hmm whatever and let the clutch out and started pressing the gas and going backwards but it popped out of reverse into neutral. it will not fully go into reverse anymore and i am totaly puzzled. does anyone know what may be causing this and has the solution to my problem? please leave me a message soon as you can because now i have to park on the street and i cant pull into parking spaces at all. thank you in advanced.

Reverse problem

It seems to be a well documented fault on here - if you search reverse problems you'll find lots of posts about it. Something about a nut coming loose - you'll get lots of replies about it - Bundy is your best bet - that bloke knows everything.

Your problem sounds strange. Do you still have reverse at all? Have you checked the gearbox oil recently? The loose nut mentioned, if it drops out, means you cannot get reverse at all. What happens is the nut/pivot is loosened to do an oil check, (It looks exactly the same as the oil filler,) and the selector pivot drops down into the box, and no more reverse. Solution, remove gearbox to relace pivot. But first, If you can get reverse gear, then thats not your problem. Try putting it in reverse with the engine off, then start it with the clutch pushed in, and the handbrake off. Does it creep backwards? It could be a clutch issue. The clutch could be worn out, and isnt disengauging properly. This will make it more difficult to put into reverse than a forward gear, because of the straight cut gears. Is there much freeplay in the clutch pedal, ie does it go a bit of the way to the floor before you start feeling clutch pressure? If so, there is adjustment in the clutch cable.
Answer these questions, and we may have something to go on.

it dosnt even go into reverse with the engine off, i cant get it into reverse for shit, it went once or twice and when i would try and back up it pops into neutral. i have no clue waht it is.

oh and you are saying the people loosen it to do an oil change/check. well i just got the oil changed about a week ago, so could it be somthing that the people at the shop did?

Yep, Problem found. Take it back to the shop, and ask them to put the vehicle in reverse for you. When they cant, ask them to show you which plug they removed to refill the gearbox oil. If they show you the 24/25mm plug on the left hand side of the gearbox, the one that should be fitted with an aluminium lock washer, you can give them the good news that they have stuffed your gearbox, and how would they like to fix your reverse gear. With luck, there will still be a fresh trace of oil that has trickled down from the hole, as evidence of their mistake. It means removal of the gearbox, accessing the internals through the top cover, and replacing the reverse selector lever, which pivots on the bolt they mistakenly removed.
The correct gearbox filler plug is the 24/25mm nut on the right hand side of the gearbox, on the same side as the transfer case filler plug. Dont worry, your not the first to have it happen. Unfortunately, its not a 5 minute fix.

4WD ?

Experienced similar problem with my Sportrak. I unknowingly knocked the 4WD selector so it had become positioned between Low & High. Sporty would not go into reverse. Panic was over when the 4WD gear selector was re-positioned.
