Problem with brakes

Forum:

After 5 months of restoration my 91 fourtrak is ready for an MOT but there is too much travel on the brake pedal which I think is going to let it down. The master cylinder is fine, new calipers, bled up and no air, has anyone else had this problem or know of anything else that could be the cause ???

Anyone

Can anyone help ??:help:

Make sure the rear brake shoe

Make sure the rear brake shoes are fully adjusted up. Dont rely on the automatic adjusters, as they dont do the best of jobs. You can access the adjusters for manual adjustment through the elongated rubber plugs in the backing plates. They rotate upwards to adjust outwards, so jack each wheel up, use a screwdriver, and lever them upwards (screwdriver handle downwards, pivoting on the backing plate.) This will also adjust your handbrake. It should come up only 3 or 4 notches. After doing this, dont drive through any mud prior to the MOT.

Thanks

Thanks for this ! I ( well boyfriend ) will try this later. Another thing we had thought about was that because everything was new maybe it needs time to bed in Unknw Oh I dont know, having moved on from a Ford Orion with keen brakes the fourtrak just seems a bit scary !
Thanks again !!!

Possibly.

Further to comments below ... try adjusting the handbrake tensioners which sometimes sets the rear brakes, to correct any free play beween drum and linings.

Thanks Mace

Thanks also for youre help! Its all double dutch to me, but I will pass your advice on to my BF tonight !

Also, were the rear drums ski

Also, were the rear drums skimmed/lathed to remove any grooving? If so, and you have put new shoes in them, then they are different diameters, and will, as you say, take time to bed in. If this is the case, you will find your rear shoes always wear the centres out first, while the ends are nearly as good as new.

Thanks again David I have passed youre advice onto my boyfriend and hes going to have another look. He's also mentioned something about a bypass valve Unknw

Well we have done all the things suggested on here and there is a bit of an improvement, the pedal isnt going down as far and the brakes do seem a bit keener. She is booked in on friday for the MOT so its a case of fingers crossed !;)

Bypass valve? Does he mean th

Bypass valve? Does he mean the brake proportioning valve, thats mounted halfway along the right hand chassis rail. It does have a bleeder screw in it, but I have never had to bleed it there. I have always been able to get them to bleed at the rear drum OK.

He meant the valve near the bulkhead Unknw Does this make any sense Unknw We have re bled the system not using that valve though and still found no air. I think he's going to see what the bloke at the garage has to say before he does any more to it.
Thanks again

Sequence.

Hope you bled in the correct sequence. Longest run first and shortest must be last. If wrong order there will be air in the system and hence a longer pedal travel.[also possibly pulling/braking to one side]
