Forum:

got a f70- rocky, 1989 2.8D

now the drivers side cv joint has gone, taken out the old shaft and joint, and got a good cv joing, on a bad shaft, so want to change over to the good shaft i have got.

The question is, how the hell do you get the CV joint off the end of the drive shaft?

CV Joint

Need to wash the grease out of CV then should find a circlip inside CV joint. If not hold shaft and tap cv off with hammer!

hi! yep there is a clip,

hi!

yep there is a clip, if you expand it, it dont free the shaft! wacking it, and i have wacked it hard dont work either, is there another clip inside the joint? i.e. once its on its not supposed to come off in one bit?

anyone wana ride in my hovercraft!

Hold the shaft vertically in

Hold the shaft vertically in a vice, with the CV downward. Put something soft, rag or foam, on ground under the CV. Hold a piece of hardwood against the inside lip of the CV bell. Hit the wood HARD with a big hammer. The outer end of the axle will pop off eventually.
There is a circlip, more like a spring wire ring, on the end of the inner axle, inside the CV joint. This actually gets compressed into the groove in the axle, as the splined inner part of the CV slides over it.

Cheers
David
