leaky fuel tank help!!

Forum:

Can anyone give me some advice on what to do with my leaky fuel tank.
Recently, I have noticed a strong smell of fuel from my fourtrak 2.8TD on investigating I have found fuel dripping from my tank. It is hard to see exactly where it is coming from because it is behind a metal piece.
I was wondering if tanks can be fixed or will I need A new tank.
If it is the latter, can anyone advise me on how much it will cost? Is it a difficult job?
Thankful of any advice.

This is a fairly common problem. Lets call it a design fault. The fuel tank bolts up under 2 cross members. This forms a trap where mud/dirt/water collects. It eventually eats away the tank. Unbolt the tank, and clean up the mess. I have repaired one using solder, but it must be perfectly spotless. Otherwise, solder a large patch over the complete problem area. And make sure you regularly clean this area out.

This used to be a perennial problem with the Morris Marina (for those who remember such things)for identical reasons as stated above, and I fixed a fair few with fibreglass sheet & resin - cheap, but again it must be spotless. Like the Marina, it may be a good idea to clean up and cover the whole tank like this. End of problem forever.

Leaky fuel tank............

Hi there i had the same problem earlier this year with my F78. If you manage to un bolt the protection plate - 2 bolts really awkward above rear axle! one of mine corroded in - take a look at the nut which i assume is a drain plug in the centre bottom of the tank - mine although wasnt particularly loose needed nipping up a bit tighter - though care must be taken not to be tempted to over tighten! this solved my problem, hope thats all yours turns out to be.
ps if you can get them i always replace any bolts with stainless ones! i am lucky that i use a good bolt supplier with my job.
all the best ;),
nige.
