No 4WD???

Forum:

Just been in a field with my 1991 Sporty and tried 4WD with the shift lever into 4H... just the rears spin up.
I can't tell if it has manual or auto hubs as they are covered with a large cap - is the only way to tell to remove a front wheel to get the cap off, and if they are auto, what could the problem be?

Tony.

If they have a cap right over

If they have a cap right over they they'll be auto. If they are manual there will be a metal end of the hub pocking through a holl in the end of the plastic cap.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

I've never played with auto h

I've never played with auto hubs. However if they were manual hubs I would sugest taking them apart, cleaning, greasing, and putting back together. If it were my jeep, I'd give it a go. As there auto hubs though I'm afraid I don't know how to get into them.

Does your green 4x4 light on

Does your green 4x4 light on the dash light up??

If it does, your hubs are probably faulty - replace with manual hubs.

If not, you have an issue with the vacuum swtiches / solenoid which controls the plunger in the transfer case. This plunger drops in to engage 4wd mode, and retracts to disengage.

It's deffo the hubs, as today

It's deffo the hubs, as today I put it into 4H, jacked up the front drivers wheel which turned by hand - but the front drive shafts are solid.
Maybe if I drive about in 4H for a while, they might release themselves...
