Charade EL July 04, drive shafts gone before 10,000 miles

Forum:

The car has just come back from it's 2nd annual service with a report advising the immediate replacement of both drive shafts. It hasn't even done 10,000 miles yet and is still under waranty which should cover the bill which is not cheap by any stretch (£240.50 for one and £275.90 for the other PLUS labour). Hovever what really concerns me is medium term viability of the car. We have never owned one before and with this kind of serious problem at just 2 years old we would have to think hard before buying another. Does anyone one have any similar problems to share?

Wrong place I reckon

Sorry folks I have obviously posted this in the wrong place. Can some kind person please move this to the right place?? Thanks Blush

First thing I would do is ask

First thing I would do is ask garage to retain the drive shafts..I would want to see which part of them had failed...was the car making any strange noises from the front wheels before they gave you the bad news...garages get up to all sorts of tricks to get work...the fact is that it is possible for driveshafts to develop problems no matter what their age...I just had to shell out over £800 on a gear box repair to a three year old car...one of the main bearings had gone at 24,000 miles...most expensive ball bearing in history I reckon....I was disgusted and I am pursuing the manufacturer for reimbursment...the car was 10 days out of warranty...

In a way your lucky the car is still in warranty but I would still want to see why the shafts had failed cos its most unusual specially with Daihatsus....Japanese engineering and all that...

Funny how both of them have failed simultainiously

Good advice

Thanks Mike for your good advice. Yes both shafts started making clicking noises when cornering about 3 months ago but only on very sharp cornering. The noise gradually became louder and more noticeable during ANY cornering to the left or right. The effect could be reduced by morfe gentle cornering with minimal acceleration. I will certainly request to keep both drive shafts. Any suggestions on who could check them for me? Perhaps even the manufacturer may be interested in this one.

As you rightly say: "Funny how both of them failed simultaineously" and I would add to that: "mighty peculiar as well". One, but not both together surely?!

A clicking noise when corneri

A clicking noise when cornering is the tell tale symptom of failed drive shaft so it would appear that the garage has made a correct diagnosis...could be that both shafts came from a dud batch at the factory...least you have warranty and it wont hurt your pocket...but still an inconvienience. Remember that the work done by the garage should have a 12 month guarantee at least...Daihatsu vehicles have a reputation for mechanical reliability....I think you have simply been unlucky with this problem...I once had a peugeot that had a drive shaft fail...got it changed...went again 12 months later...I couldn't believe it.

Ask the garage why they think the shafts failed considering their low milage...see what they say

Tapping noise turning right....

I have a 53 Charade and had this tapping on full right lock since it was just out of warranty. The last MOT says 12315 miles and it's not done much more than that. I had a garage look at it in August last year and they put 'suspected CV joint wear,' and perhaps I'd bounced down a curb??? I'm hoping that this is all it is as I've already had a new front exhaust and need the back doing now.
I met a woman with the same car recently and she told me hers was making the same noise but she'd had it fixed under warranty, she seemed to think it was a common fault.
Any ideas please?

Had the same thing not long after I bought my 53 Charade. They were replaced under warranty. Daihatsu UK were great because the car was 2 years old but had only one service. They agreed that the 7000 miles it had covered in that period were little enough to validate the warrantly claim despite the missing service.

CV problem

let me know how you get on.
My Daihatsu Charade is under 10000 miles amd has the same problem.

The garage said at the time 'it is a know problem with a batch of these cars!!!'

However even though my supplied book etc states #3 year warranty# Daihatsu are at the moment not budging in authorising this repair at the dealers(car is an Irish import).
This is bad in that there a a slight click on full right lock a long time back but was not sure where it came from and felt safe with the '3 year warranty'

More soon...

The drive shaft work is scheduled for 18 July so I will do a post when I have some information from the service engineer. Thanks for your help and interest Mike.

Your very welcome.....hope I

Your very welcome.....hope I was of some help...good luck with the garage.

As you suggested it might be worth letting Daihatsu know of your mechanical failure.

CV Joints

I've just been advised that my outer CV joint is worn - only to be told, 4 months out of warranty, that the drive shaft needs replacing! And my little Charade has only done 12,000 miles! Upon talking to a dealer, though, apparently it's a common problem with them, and later models have had this problem rectified...... I'm gonna give it a good bash at getting Daihatsu to show a bit of goodwill, and help me towards the cost, seeing as I have full service history etc etc......will post as soon as I have any more news on this.....
Apart from that.....I love this little car, I always had Volvos before so this is quite a downsize (cutting costs tho) and I thought I'd hate every moment of it, but to my surprise I'm very impressed with her (it's gotta be a her cos she's pink!!) on long and short journeys alike. Of course, what really sold her is the £40 per year road tax!!!

Yep - had mine replaced not

Yep - had mine replaced not long after getting the car.

Certainly < 20, 000 miles, but within the 3 year warranty. I was told by the dealer that it is quite common.

Not had any problems since and now over 40k miles.

Charade drveshafts update

just to update on the comment I made avbout my driveshafts going at very low mileage....as I already said, apparently it was a known problem with Charades of that year (2003), my car was a few months outside the warranty, but I got in touch with my local Daihatsu garage, who, in turn got in touch with Daihatsu, and they replaced the driveshafts free of charge!!! To say I was more than happy is a big understatement, cos I couldn't afford that sort of money. I have since done another nearly 10,000 miles in her, driving her hard and fast (yes, I know I shouldn't, but when you've been used to a 2 litre Volvo, and you're always late, then you tend to drive fast!!) I've been down to Portsmouth, up to North East Yorkshire, across to North Wales, in fact all over the place really, and my little Charade has done me proud. She's a wonderful little car, and does everything I ask of her (which is a hell of a lot at times!) Couldn't ask for a better, cheaper, or more economical car (and this comes from someone who drives brand new, and business demonstrator cars for a living!!!) Smile

Charade SL 03 drive shaft on the way out after 8,000 miles

I read with interest the comments on this thread. We have recently bought a second hand Daihatsu Charade, after reading all the great reviews that it had from the motoring press regarding reliability, economy etc. We are pleased with the car, but it also has developed this clicking noise when going around corners. We have had our local Daihatsu dealer look at it, and he confirms that it is the drive shaft on it's way out. This with only 8,000 miles on the clock. The Daihatsu dealer that we have contacted has quoted £850 just for the driveshaft!! This figure doesn't seem to bear any resemblance to the other prices quoted on this thread.

We are out of warranty, the car has missed one service but was serviced at a Daihatsu garage for it's first two services, the rest of the services being with independent garages. But as far as we are concerned this isn't a service or warranty issue, but a design failure on the part of Daihatsu.

We have been told that we can contact Daihatsu and they might do a goodwill jesture for part of the cost. We bought this car to save money, but the last car that we had (Nissan) when the CV joint went it cost £150 to fix, how can Daihatsu justify its prices?

We love the car, but are in no position to fork out £800+. Any advice as to how we should approach Daihatsu direct (which seems to be our next move) would be valued.

Post script on Charade SL 03 drive shafts

Just as a post script to my posting of 21/8/08, I did contact Daihatsu UK Customer service regarding the problem with my drive shafts, and before I had finished explaining, he said that I should give him 10 minutes to contact the dealer, then phone my local dealer (who I already had been in contact with)and book it in, and that it would be fixed at no charge to myself! I was gobsmacked! And although it has taken the dealer a little time to order the correct parts, today I collected the car, with the new parts fitted and no more clicking!

As someone who has driven only Nissans for the last 20 years, there was always a concern with moving over to a different car company, and when this problem arose, I thought I had made the wrong decision, even though the car is great, but my faith is now restored in what I think is a great car, and a company with honest customer service, a rare combination these days!

driveshafts

Hello

my parents car needed them at 14k miles Sad but i took it in, let the foreman here what i heard, and next week both the driveshafts were replaced under warranty. Smile Apparently a batch of them did not have the correct quantity of grease in them hence the rapid wear, give them a call and see no harm in asking.
In the daihatsu magazine there is a case of a nine year old ( Shok ) fourtrak getting a new chassis under warranty so there is a good chance for your driveshafts

i'm sure daihatsu would would rather give good customer care, because you would purchase another vehicle off them if they do replace them and the word of mouth you will pass on to others may get them another sale or two
