New to Diahatsu

Forum:

HI. I'm new to driving and hope to pass my test pdq. The Diahatsu fourtrak and Sportrak look just what I'm looking for - reliable, hardy, tough and rugged, not too big, but are they suitable for a newbie? Also, what should I look out for when buying, I am mechanically minded and quite handy, but what are the weak points and what are the desirable extras to search out?

I will be using the car for travelling about 25miles per day on country A roads, and may use the car for occasional load carrying.

Any hints and tips gratefully received. :0)

Chris

Spanners GOOD ..... Insurance BAD

Yep, you should have no probs spannering the beasts, but, if you are young and have just passed your test, you will find the insurance pretty horrendous. For example, my insurance does not allow anyone under 25 to drive my 4trak.

Gone are the days when you could insure a 2.25 litre land rover (old group 1) for peanuts and drive reasonably cheaply (except for their prodigious thirst for petrol). The insurance companies (pause to spit) have got wise to this, and 4wds get hammered nearly as much as large cars with engines as big.

Doh! Got the name wrong.

Thanks for the replies. First lessong - get the spelling right. I've been riding bikes for the last 28yrs, but thought it was about time I got the extra two wheels (and they might as well be powered)! The Japs have made a pretty good 'fist' at making bikes so I reckon they should be able to bolt a 4x4 together. Chris

hi i've had both sportrak and now a fourtrak and i should say the main problem would be rust be sure to check all the floors and arches, chasies are normaly ok but just check around the suspention mounts. fourtraks are pretty bulletproof engine other wise just check gearbox feels ok and fourwheel drive works.
Sportraks engines seem pretty good and go loads better with k&n and exorst mods. but they seem prone to blowing head gascets from what ive notest so chech the water and oil for white sludge. Other than that i never really put a spanner to mine, other than cheap and easy mods that make it a very capeable offroader. hope this helps. Sam.
