Diahatsu Applause Hot and Cold radiator hoses

Forum:

My girlfriend has a 1996 Diahatsu Applause that we are experiencing a hard to rectify cooling problem After a replacement engine was fitted. The car overheats sporadically but almost always there's a quiet bubbling/gurgling coming from the outflow resevoir upon stopping. I think this is a problem with coolant flow; the bottom radiator hose feels almost cool to the touch while the top one is extremely hot.

I have however had the thermostat replaced, the radiator cleaned as well as the radiator end tanks removed and core inspected, the radiator cap replaced, also the temperature sensor switch that activates the radiator fan replaced. Engine has been inspected and tested it's not a blown or cracked head gasket( Compression test and a water test for carbon dioxide). Car is about to have water pump removed checked / replaced. Have been told that these engines can have problems with air pockets but no obvius bleed point. Although if water pump doesnt work may plum a air bleed tap?(reduntant sensor where top radiator hose meets head may be the easist spot) Any help would be much appreciated.

Water Pump.

Water pump is probably knackered.
Phone a diahatsu garage and speak to the Service Engineer'. Ask the engineer if its necessary to bleed the air from coolant of an Applause. They will tell you if there is a trick to the task!

Water pump perfect

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Water pump is perfect but will replace while out anyway. Radiator has tap at bottom of tank may be there to bottom fill radiator and force air pockets out.

The plug on the bottom of t

The plug on the bottom of the rad is for draining, any sort of bleed tap would always be on a high point.
You say you have cleaned the rad out, did you also do the engine block?
Dont buy rad cleaner thats on the shelf in spares shops, ask for the stuff that garages use, they should have some behind the counter, all our locals do!!
If not go to the place they get parts from, the factors, they will have some.
It was made by Wynn's but was for refridgerator descaler use and very heavy duty.
Has it had any rad sealer put in to cure leaks, too much can cause blockages??
Has it had a head gasket change and the wrong one put on with different water ports??
At a wild guess is the engine running lean?? this would create more heat, but it should seize soon if thats the case.
Regards,
Dave.
