Wheel Nut Locks

Forum:

I have recently purchased a 1992 Sportrak. Totally brilliant complete with Alloys, which provide the problem. All have wheel nut locks but no keys for these came with the vehicle. Does anyone know if keys can be purchased separately or know of any helpful solution.

I doubt you can buy keys for

I doubt you can buy keys for them without the original receipt and lock numbers...anyone could could go and buy them which degates having them fitted in the first place i.e. security !!

I reckon you will probably have to drill or grind them off m8 and then replace with new ones. I did see a guy in a local tyre/scrappy place remove a wheel nut lock without drilling....those guys seem to know how to get em off without drilling..pay a visit to your friendly local tyre/scrappy and seek their advice.

If you've bought the car rece

If you've bought the car recently why not get in touch with previous owners, someone along the line must have the keys for them!

Try a tyre shop

You cannot buy the keys for the wheel locks generally. However tyre places and mechanics do usually have a special tool which attaches to locking nuts and removes them, because you'd be suprised how often people lose them or never got them when they bought their car. Probably cost you a few quid to have it done if that and then the price of the replacement ones you buy.

Are they the sort of security

Are they the sort of security nuts that look like an ordinery nut, but with groves down the sides instead of a hex-head? If try to find a socket (the sort that the part that fits to the nut/bolt looks like a milti pointed star rather that a hexigon) that's close to but smaller than the offending nut, you should be able to hammer it onto the nut to undo it. This workes well with damaged nuts/bolts as well.
Once you've removed the nuts it's worth noting that Ford Siera security nuts are the same thread, as Daihatsu is often not put onto the 'this will fit list'. Daihatsu genuin tendes to be expensive in this department.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
