fitting a KnN filter, increase or decrease mpg or insurance premium?

Forum:

Hi,
I'm thinking about fitting a KnN air filter to my sportrak Elxi. Does it increase/decrease mpg or insurance premiums or mpg?

Many thanks,

Charlie

Fuel economy & insurance

At first my fuel economy went up, then it dropped again. Lost around 3-5 mpg with it fitted, but gives noticable performance gains.

Technically, you should inform your insurance company, as its a mod to the engine, but I don't know anybody who has bothered.

If you have an accident, I would take it off before the insurance man comes round.

K&N

I agree better perfomance on acceleration and maybe top end but MPG improvment, in my opinion none that is noticable.

As for Insurance, well any excuse will give them an option not to pay up but if you let them know then you mayget an increase for doing so. I did with a front nudge bar when I lived in the UK 10 years ago, £60 increase so off the bars came. So its up to your concience. I would say nothing and have done on both of my Sporties. I live in France and I know if I had an accident the cars would be written off anyway regardless as they are too old if more than 5 years. We are advised to just have 3rd party cover for that very reason.

Happy 2007

Adding the K&N filter has

Adding the K&N filter has slightly decreased my MPG (or maybe it's because I'm a whore for the increase in speed and I floor it more ^^)

I'm 23 and I only passed my test 6 months ago, I'm insured fully comp with Endsleigh (paying a painful £2300 a year, goes down to £1000 in another 6 months though \o/)

I phoned them up to ask about the filter, I said it helps with fuel efficiency and that the car is thirsty enough as it is, they asked me how much the filter cost (I adviced them 38 quid), they said "okay, no extra charge for that, but there's a £15 admin fee to adjust your policy, that 15 quid will be spread across the remaining 6 months" to which I agreed, but I was stunned they didn't want anything more for it.

I think I'll probably change insurers when it's time to renew but heh, at least they didn't want any extra for a non-standard air filter that increases performance Wink

insurance

only had ma sporty 2 weeks already had to replace tha clutch!!! jus hope this aint a sighn of things to come!!

your insurance is crazy. give adrian flux a bell. mines a grand, im 24 got 17points and i wrote my civic off at the start of last year, not a nice year!
And before any1 says u cant have 17 points, u can, as i need my license for my job, and the offence was driving without insurance, even tho had fully comp on another car! bald tyre, and i had 6 points before that speeding in the wrks van. then a tt99 for toting up points, i wouldn't advise this tho!!!

but anyways give adrian flux a call, no1 else would even insure me!there good for modified vehicles aswell.

Does anyone know interesting to go offroading in suffolk? the flat lands seem very crapy so far!
