Buying a YRV Turbo- what should i be aware of?

Hi there, First let me introduce myself, my name is Dave – I’m a 23 year old playwork student from Leeds.

Tomorrow I am going to have a look at a YRV Turbo at a Daihatsu dealer in Barnsley- Is there anything that I should be aware of before buying the car?

Obviously I’ll be checking it for a smoking turbo and or a cracked manifold ad all the other general used car points, but knowing very little about the car I don’t really know what to look for in her!

Could someone please tell me if the car lives up to the lust that I have harboured for it ever since driving one 3 years ago?!

Nice choice!!
You dont say how old the car is?

Check the condition of the front discs, very expensive to replace, same for the exhaust, dealership only to date.

The manifold is always rusty due to heat and water dribble off the air scoop.

The variable valve timing causes valve chatter below 2000 revs, especialy from cold start.

Ask if the rear roll bar has been replaced, the bracket can snap under strain.

Was shocked when told it had been back for fuel tank sender twice!, central locking fault, pedal bush??, gear shifter chrome cap replacement(it fell off)and recently the battery.
Lucky with the battery, probably caused through short trips, dark morns/nights etc, one dealer said it was only covered for two years yet another said three, thanks to Hepworth motor Co!!

I would change the oil as soon as, dealers sometimes use cheap stuff.

They are great fun, well happy with mine!!!

What a disapointment!

Went to have a look yesterday... What a disapointment!

The car was called back from having a replacement screen for me to have a look at so i figured that the dealer would be fairly eager to do a deal with me. How wrong could I be?!

I had been told that the car had full dealer history, whereas infact the car had missed 4 service intervals, and had never ever been serviced at either a main dealer or a performance / turbo specialist (these car really need looking after! They have 6000 mile service intervals!)- so the remainder of the warentee would be void.

The miles were astronomical for the age- 38'000 on an 04 plate, and the dealer wouldn't budge on price- £4500. Glasses and parkers value it at £4100 dealer price in perfect condition.

Am I right in thinking that I should leave this one well alone?

Too right, sounds to be below average.
Are you talking about the yellow one on Autotrader online?
Dont they also have a black one lower miles and cheaper??
Dont rush buy, have look on ebay, they pop up quite often.
Bought mine from there and its perfect.
The 6k oil services are a minimum, mine was done every 3k up to 15k by the last owner, the 6,12,18k's by dealerships, on 19k(04 reg) now.

Its currently on autotrader at the moment- it metalic black- really not my colour (want either silver or canary yellow), the dealer did have an 18k car- but i belive that they never really had the car, it was just to draw attention to their higher millage car.

I was concerned about the servicing intervals being missed, and from what i have heard I am justified there- to be honest the dealer wants a far too strong price for what can only be described as a sub-standard car. I am like you- I would like to see oil changes every 3k considering that it is a very highly stressed engine with an oil cooled turbo- and full dealer or specialist history, not patchy history with a Renault dealer who have no knowledge of the car.

Yellow??
Sorry meant Black, got mixed up with the pic of the Yellow one underneath that i was looking at the same time.
Have you seen the 04 Silver 5k from Heskeths at the bottom?
Think the sales guy give a bit too much part ex on that one!!!
Its been £6995 for 12 months now, maybe get it for the going rate if you can waive a Glasses guide as you enquire???

Just given them a call and the guy was rather rude to say the least.

He said that he took it on trade in from a lady who paid £14'000 for it so it has to be a premium price!!!

I asked him what the price was- as i thought that someone had made a grave error in pricing it, he said he had refused £5k from a Daihatsu dealer. (rubish!!!)

Then he asked if i was a garage, told him i was a private individual, he then said good luck finding one at that price and hung up... needless to say i will not be returning the phone call!

Aso I have ruled out the one from Barnsley- the missed service intervals and lack of history and numerous owners and the creaky interior have knocked it on the head for me!

Turbo

Hi.
Mine was from e-bay over a year ago at £5600 and is a 04 plate, although it now has a YRV plate!
Not had a moments problem and it is now on 29000 miles.
It is Sunflower yellow, without the awful 130 graphics on the lower doors.
It also has leather as it was a motor show car but I don't know of any other ones the same.
Have had the front discs/pads replaced and fitted a Blitz induction filter along with bigger alloys.
Great fun to drive once you get used to the gearbox.
I don't tend to use the manual option as I can never find the buttons when wheel is upside down!
If you can get one I would say do it.

yrv Turbo

Just keep looking mate. I got mine from Ebay £4995 with 3 year warrenty only done 7500 miles and was owned by 85 year old man was on 03 plate. Car is a dream, have fitted Blitz dump valve and filter expensive but sounds great.
Keep looking it will be worth the wait

daihatsu yrv 130 turbo

i must be lucky i have probably one of the last yrv turbos a 05 reg in sunflower yellow only done 13000 miles with fuull Daihatsu service history,and what a fantastic car,cannot here the engine at tickover its so smooth,but when you need the speed it flies 100% recommended, not much to go wrong as its a daihatsu great reliability.
