Forum:
i just bought a sprtrak off ebay, now bear inmind i havent picked it up (or paid for it yet, so i have a little option of backing out)
i phoned the guy today and he said that welding needs doing, it was picked up n the preMOT. theres one piece of bodywork that needs tidying, however the other pieces that require welding are rear spring mounting points, offside and nearside i presume, and also two things need strengthening up by two mounting points on the front end.
what im asking is - are these jobs very complicated? would i have to remove the springs before welding takes place?
i can get some welding done from a friend of mine but id have to take it to his yard and therefore wouldnt be able to remove the springs there.
is it more complicated than normal welding to do 'strengthening around mounting points"?
The rear leaf sping mounting
The rear leaf sping mounting points are nicely exposed on the rea chassis rails, and very easy to get at. Any competent welder would have no problem plating this area, so long as the corrosion does not extend to the tops of the chassis rails, which would need the body off to fix.

hopefully it wont strecth
hopefully it wont strecth that far, im glad its easy to get in as i dont have the facilities or time to take the body off whatsoever.
i have a contact who can weld her up for me, so long as i can identify all the points that need work. hopefully from the preMOT inspection report and the car on the drive i can see what needs done.
how much would i have to pay for this type of work?

MOT welding
The new computerised MOT fail sheets have only a set number of options for recording corrosion fails so you might find that although it says "suspension mounting corroded" this may be just the closest matching option on the computer and the corroded area may be nearby or even on another part of the car within 300mm or so from where they tell you it is. My mondeo failed last year on corroded rear seat belt anchorages - the actual holes were in in the outer sill, but within 300mm of the anchorages !!! You'll know more when you see the car, if it has failed the MOT it should be marked with yellow chalk in the areas which are corroded.
Al.
just picked her up and its
just picked her up and its looking very good. the pre mot states:
leaking brake pipe leading to 46% braking efficiency
offside rear suspension mounting prescribed area excessively corroded
offside rear body has excessive corrosion within 30cm of body mouhtings
nearside front body has excessive corrosion within 30cm of body mountings
offside front body has unsatisfactory modification within 30cm of body mounting
brake pipe can be sorted myself.
thinking the unsat modification could be some rather nasty bullbar brackets, or perhaps some bodged welding?
is there anyway of finding the exact spots they mention as there are numbers next to each line on the report.
dont think that there is much work to do as the garage which did the report quoted £250 all in and a free retest, so it shouldnt be too much of a job.
