Need torque specs for 1996 Hijet .993L

Forum:

Please help, my 1996 Hijet overheated and blew the head gasket. I have obtined all the parts, but need to know the torque values for the Cylinder head.

Any help would be appreciated.

torque settings

hi

cylinder head settings for a hi-jet van 1996 (1995-2003)1.0 engine CB-42

stage 1 14-24 Nm
stage 2 24-44 Nm
stage 3 54-64 Nm

as per autodata cd but i would still check with manual to make sure

why did the vch overheat check the problem before the cure
water pumb,stat, thermo fan etc

overheating problem

I am replacing the water pump since I have the head off anyways, as well as the thermostat.

Before the overheating incident I had plugged the fan in so it ran constanly. This did not seem to help a whole lot, except that I could get the 30 miles to work without it overheating (It would start overheating when I got there).

With the fan plugged in normally and the van suitting in the driveway the fan did seem to cycle on and off normally however.

I did the radiator flush and refill according to the owners manual, but that did not seem to help either.

Anything else you can think of to check? The only way I know to check the radiator is to pull it out and put a hose in the top and see if the water comes out the bottom.

Is the heater core behind the dash, or is there a simpler way to get to it in these little vans?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the torque specs ! A big help! Smile

overheating problem

hi

i am afraid i dont know if the access to the heater matrix is behind the dash but i would guess it is sods law

it is good pratice and recommended that you replace the water pump and stat why do a job twice also i would replace the thermofan sender unit on the rad but my best guess is the pump as these arent that well made on most vchs the fins behind the pump break off or the shaft or clutch, bearings breaks meaning the outside turning and the inside not

i would check the hoses for collapse i have seen it happen

the only other thing that comes to mind is checking the mating services of the block and head for tureness and maybe geting the head pressure checked to see if the water ways are clear

there is a way of pressure testing the coolent system but it does require a special bit of kit sort of like a rad cap with a hose on it connected to a dial to measure air pressure connected to a bike pump, pump the pump and pressurize the system and if correct the dial wont move and nothing will happen if however there is a leak one of two things will happen the system will lose pressure and or water will squirt out of the offending hole i brought one of these years ago worth every penny i spent on it dont know if you can still get them

also i would invest in a sniff tester its a device to test the overflow bottle to see if there are any exhaust gases in the water by a chemical reaction sort of pump device with a chemical in it which jams into the overflow or top of the rad and the chemical changes colour if it detects certain gases(emissions) that one works for me most of the time cost me about £30 a couple of years back and has made its money time and time again

thats about it for the moment i am sure that if anyone else can think of something they will post it

Replaced head gasket

Well, I got the head gasket replaced. It finally started for me, but there are some weird things going on....

I was idling it and trying to fill it up with water, but the water kept surging out of the heater core outlet (that little rubber thing you take off over the radiator when you fill it up). I dont know how else to describe it it would run fluid, then air, then fluid then air etc..

I finally just put the thing back on and filled it up from the radiator. Then, the overflow bottle will just sit there bubbling Sad it will bubble bubble bubble while slowly filling up then the top will start leaking.

Could the heater core be clogged? I cant think of anything that would cause a surging like this except back pressure in the cooling system, but I cant think where it would come from.

Also, even though the tempurature guage said it was warm, the heater did not blow warm air....Hmmmmm maybe it is a clogged heater core. Except water does squirt out of the little thing with the rubber cap, so who knows.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

replaced head gasket

hi cowbird

time for best guess then

yes it could be a blocked matrix but that wouldnt explain the bubbling only the lack of warm air there are two ways to check this firstly bypass the heater completely by joining together the inlet and oulet hoses using a 12/ 16 mm bit of copper heating pipe or the such and some clamps if it stops problem solved secondly stick a hose pipe up the outlet side of the heater and see if water comes out the other side

the only other thing that i can think of that causes surging or bubbling in the expansion tank is engine compression blowing past a head gasket or cracked head if you open the throttle and increase the revs does the bubbling increase if it does then i am afraid i would have to suspect the head

i would however do a compression test on the engine to check the results

i note that you had overheating problems before the gasket change and it is possible that if this is a alli engine that the head could have warped or cracked when it got hot did you have the head skimmed and pressure tested before replacing it

i must admit to never having owned one of these and therefore my information is a bit general and a wee bit vague on certain parts and it is difficult to assess a situation in the third party therfore i cannot guarantee results just best guess

i am sure that there must be owners or other members with other ideas

Bubble Bubble...

No, I did not have the head tested, I just kinda crossed my fingers and dove in.

I will bypass the heater core and see if that helps and can probably get my hands on a compression tester to test the cylinders.

Thanks for all your help, my wife is ready to write this one off, but I really enjoy driving this little van Smile ! If nothing else works I wonder if I can find a second hand engine at a junk yard?

Anyways, thanks again!
