Fourtrak/Rocky Transfer Box problem!

Forum:

Hi all,

I'm from Bulgaria! Exuse me if my English is not so good!

I have read all the forum topics about related problems: about reverse gear problems and so on, but I still have some qestions.

I own F70 1988 2.8D. When I drive on low gears and put reverse after 3-4 meters the transfer lever jumps out to N position and ofcourse the car stops. This happens also in Low 2 or third gear. When i drive downhills with low speed when the load raises and the transfer lever jumps out to N. On 1-st gear I don't saw any problems. There is no strange sound from the transferbox - only this problem. Has anyone idea what the possible causes are and can I continue to use it or there is risk to brake something more? I saw a similar topic here and the advise was to tie the transfer lever with rope and drive thisway :). Is this a solution? Thanks in advance!

That is the simplist answer.

That is the simplist answer. Though it's a 'bungi' (elasticated / stretchy) cord you want.
The problem is most likely that the spring in the top of the transfur box which pushes a ball baring into a depresion in the transfure lever to hold it in place has brocken. Or the sides of the depresion, or the baring it-self has warn away. These can be fixed / replaced fairly easily with limited mecanical knowlage, but it is a lot of messing about.
Personally I'd just go for the bungi strap approch.

Can this problem be related

Can this problem be related with the famous "loose main shaft nut" problem? Because I have difficulties to shift down from third to second gear also. And in some cases a just can't shift from 4L to 4H or from 4H to 4l. I will check this nut and hope to minimize the problem with shifting.

The main shaft nut is a

The main shaft nut is a gearbox problem, and should not affect the transfure. However if your having problems shifting through the gears it may well be worth checking. Also if you are going to that much trouble, you may as well have a look in the top of the transfur while you have it off, to cheack the stuff I mentioned earlier.
