Front wheels and Front propshaft

Forum:

Should the front propshaft turn when the front wheels turn even in 2 wheel drive, or should they revolve freely. If it shouldn't what might be wrong. Thanks.

The shaft to the front

The shaft to the front wheels will be driven by the front wheels via the front differential. So when the vehicle moves the drive shaft will rotate. What you are in fact doing when you select two wheel drive is to disconnect the drive to that shaft from the transfer box. So looks like nothing to worry about to me!

Fine when its going but a pain when it's not!

front prop

The front prop should only move when the freewheeling hubs are locked in. If the freewheeling hubs are set to "free" and you have 2wd selected the front prop should'nt be connected to anything.

Front wheels and Front propshaft

The front prop should only turn when you are in 4 wheel drive unless you have the front hubs locked on. If you have Manual hubs turn the centre of the hub to FREE, on both wheels, and this will provide FREEWHEELING hubs which are more economical as you are not turning the prop, diff and transfer box. If you have Auto then reverse for about 30 foot or 10 meters and they should disengage. This should be on a sticker to the right of the steering wheel, assuming RHD, on the top of the door card. If Auto and they won't free then they are most likely seized, which appears to be quite common.
