I own a Daihatsu Fourtrak independant TDX 1997,
My question is concerning the 4 wheel drive mechanisim, inside i have a 4WD gear shifter with 2WD,Neutral and 4L option also there is a 4H powere button on the dash but here the issue there is a twisting mechanisim on both of the front tyres with the positon of "FREE" OR "LOCK" currently they are both in the free position does this mean that every time i want to use the 4WD capability that i have to get out to twist the Hubs to the "LOCK" position?
Thanks.
Got it in one
You're spot on. To get drive to the front wheels you need to set manual free wheel hubs to "LOCK". I think it's a bit unusual to have manual FWH's on a 97 Independant but I may be wrong somebody who's more knowledgeable on them will be along soon !
It's possible that somebody changed auto hubs for maunal ones due to a fault or as in my case (92 F75) having manual hubs gives the option of select low box (4L) but only driving the real wheels so you don't get any axle windup. This can be useful when towing a heavy load up a long , steep incline.
Anyway Mr welsh lad 4x4 where abouts in Wales are you
I'm in sunny Prestatyn.
Cheers
Tony
Thanks, Tone
I sorted it out and its just got an unuasal option the front wheels do automatically lock and become free as well as doing this manually according to the instuction you can leave the wheels in lock and change from 4WD TO 2WD to drive but the reason for the "FREE" option is just to help it run slightly better on road surfaces.
In responce to ur question im from Abergavenny known apparently as the gateway to Wales did some off roadin today and met anice chap in a Pajero!
