busted seats

Forum:

I just bought an F20 its been great not done any real off roading, most I have done is park it on my front lawn! now the car will not start I tracked it down to the imobilisor called the installer who tells me the fault sounds like the battery not having a big enough charge! I almost believe him as I know the starter motor is on its way out and so it could be pulling too much from the battery to do the job. So I am trying to check the battery out to make sure all the cells are good and wot not!

Here comes the question, I cant seem to find the battery where is it?

it was built in 78 and imported to Australia in 79!

Please your assistance is greatly needed.

the wife has already started nagging!!!!!!

Immobilisers very rarely

Immobilisers very rarely have their own battery, I think there's a high chance he means there's not enough charge in the main car battery, this can either be placed either placed under the bonnet (hood) or sometimes rarely under one of the seats inside the car.

What I'd do is take your main battery out, stick it on charge until the charger says its done, put it back in the car and try again. My mums 95 LWB Frontera had a thatchams alarm / immobiliser fitted, one day we tried to open the car up and it wouldn't respond to the keyfobs nor de-immobilise the engine when the touch-key (which is normally a backup) was used, we took the battery out and stuck it on charge and put it back and it worked a charm after that (although not using the car for a couple of weeks and its a bitch to turn over, I think there's a power leak someplace but thats for another forum ;))

On the (unlucky) chance the immobiliser does have a battery, you're more than likely to find it in the control box. The problem here is there's no "set" position to mount it, but I think due to space the most likely place to put it in would be behind the air filter plumbing (the big black cauldron style thing with pipes running out of it to the right of the engine block), what I would do is disconnect the car battery, and GENTLY remove the cover to see if you can disconnect a small battery inside for a few seconds then reconnect it (then reconnect the car battery afterwards) and hopefully that should get you going.

Thank you for your reply, I have stripped the imobiliser and your right there is no battery inside, problem is I cant find the main battery, its not under the hood and no access to a battery under the seats! their is a box under the car under the drivers seat but I cant work out how to get into it! I am a little purplexed. Please any one how the devil do I get into that!?

I found it!

I had to remove the drivers seat in the pooring rain but there it was the panel to get to the battery, I guess that someone in the past has changed the seats as this cant be the original way to get to the battery, far tooo difficult. I guess I better start looking for an original seat, any suggestions?

You'll probably find that is

You'll probably find that is the original. It should slid far enough forward to allow access to the battery, but rarly do due to time and rare times sliding that far forward. For charging purposes / jump starting several people I know have run a proper battery lead from the starter and the engine block / body to a tuperware box (only in the case of the positive) either under the bonnet or in front of the gril. This alowes you to take the lid of the box and conect up your booster cables with little difficalty.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Brilliant

I shall talk to my electrician friend and do just that!

OK to add to the questions

OK I found the battery as I fore mentioned I have bought the additional cables to add a jump point elsewhere on the vehicle. BUT! whilst I was putting the seats back into the car I realised that they are crap they are falling apart and I see no real length of life left in them, are there any seats from other cars that I can easily get hold of and transfer into me little "Bunky Brigade Bush Basher"?
