I'm considering buying a Fourtrak which has been used for towing two heavy horses for several years, in other words it has worked. I want to buy a Fourtrak for towing one pony. My query is, should I be wary of the amount of work this Fourtrak has done even though it drives well and has been regularly serviced?

Not at all. The 4trak is sevearly over engineared in most respects. The transmition will take a LOT of abuse, and Diesel engins in general work better / cleaner when they work hard.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Well its like alot of 4X4, theres no way of really knowing, but i know my Fourtrak when i test drove it it accelerated really well in 4th gear, but when i tow my stock tralier with about 40 sheep there no compremise on power.
These fourtaks can take a hell of alot of towing
