Forum:

hi, hope someone can share there knowledge with me. I have a elxi sporty (96) and it isnt starting.

im putting the key in the ignition and turning it, i hear a "click" and nothing comes on. iam trying with my foot on the gas before and during but it still doesnt want to play. the problem started off as intemitent but it just isnt starting now. the battery is fine as i can still open windows etc, it has a quarter of a tank of fuel in it.

any suggestions would be very helpful

FAILURE TO START SPORTY.

Normally what you are saying indicates a low battery and I am still inclined to consider this although the windows open. The car starter soleniod pull a huge amount of power to kick the starter in and turn the flywheel. A lot more than operating the window.

Check that the terminals are secure and then put the light on and try to start the car. If the lights go out then it is almost certainly insufficient power in the battery.

The click is the solenoid in the starter. If the battery is tested an shows fully charged then the starter is the next port of call. As these are pre-engaged the solenoid sits on the starter motor and not independantly so in getting a replacement the lot is changed.

Good luck

failure to start sporty

thanks miniman,

just popped outside and tried to start with the light on, the light had a slight flicker but didnt go out. from the sound of it i might guess its the starter. im crap with mechanics, any idea what someone would charge me for fittting a new one

Starter Motor

Yes it does sound that the starter has gone as the lights will flicker and is normal. It could be a bad connection of the main power lead to the starter/solnoid or even lose but I doubt it although it is not un heard of.

The best place to get one is ebay or a breakers. A new one will be pricey and if you go new then avoid Daihatsu dealers. Most MotorFactorslike Partco will get one for you as they are not unique.

Fitting is not difficult so a local garage shouldn't charge more than an hour to do the job. I say should't with caution because some are just out to make money. Unfortunately I live in France so couldn't do the job but I'm sure if you post your area on the forum some one will help you out. You really need a neighbourly mechanic to help you out.

give it a tap :)

You can also try gently tapping the starter motor with a big screwdriver / crowbar / hammer handle etc while trying to start it.

I had this problem with my zook (common issue there Smile and in the end decided not to pay ££££s for a new starter, and just replaced the (very worn!) brushes inside it.

Never a problem again after that.

why wont my sporty start?

hi chrisjel

i was tempted to post "coz its broken" am in a bit of a flippant mood today sorry!!!!

best guess is that the click you hear is the starter motor solenoid attempting to engage the starter and failing if so you will need a new or second hand starter motor.

you could try putting the vch in gear and rocking it or try bump starting it but in the end i am afraid you will be parting with pound notes

cost me

hi chrisjel

sitting down try WWW.milneroffroad.com but there isnt one listed for a sporty but they will know, but you know those moths that youve been secretly storing in your wallet well they is about to fly

joking apart you could try www.breaker.net or ebay for a second hand one as to fitting tell us where you are you never know you might have a member round the corner

i owe i owe its off to work i go well i am at work ....kinda

regards howard

start up

I had the same problem took ages to solve in the end it was the wire to the starter moter loose but still connected.

Connectors clean?

Try removing and cleaning all the connections of the starter motor, including earth connections.
Fully charge the battery and try again. If it clunks then the starter motor needs inspection .....get it checked before spending £300 on a replacement.
