nasty thunking noise from under my fourtrack

Hi all im a new owner to fourtrack and 4x4 in general,having bought my 1989 2.8td after having taken it to my mechanic and finding out what needed doing a bit of welding and a couple of shockers on the back end oh and a leaf spring no big deal its a great machine all the usual faults dogy second gear ify lights no big deal thanks to the knowledge of people on this site,but after a bit of a run the other day i noticed and felt a nasty thunkink noise coming from under the drivers seat hear we go i said to the misses as she looked sadly at me im not very lucky with cars ,after stoping having a look under and shaking things about nothing untoward so of we go no nasty noise after about a minute and nothimg since ,but it sounded realy nasty any help would be met with great thanks its a great car and goes like stink i dont want it to die help...garen

Garen, Check the side transfe

Garen, Check the side transfer case mount. Its virtually directly under the drivers seat, assuming your is RHD. There is a bracket welded to the inside of the chassis. There is a bracket bolted by 3 bolts to the right hand side rear of the transfer case. Between these is a bonded rubber/steel mount, that tends to tear and break with motor torque. This can be the cause of a thumping noise. If you cant get a replacement, you can use a long 12mm bolt, nut, large washers and 3 shock pin rubber bushes.

Not really, as the weight of the transfer case, which is quite significant, makes the broken mount remain in place. There is, after all, still the main cross member mount to hold the whole thing in place. I would say that the side mount is only there to support the offset weight of the transfer case, so the main mount doesnt self destruct.

cheers again the response on this site is great im realy glad i found it , the noise seems to be a shagged wheel bearing on the drivers rear side sending vibrations all over the place iv'e got a feeling the brakes are shot also so off with back wheels and in we go ,i will tell what goes on soon ,thanks again ,garen ps mud rules

Changing a rear wheel bearing is a bit of a pain, best done in a workshop. Remove the rear axle by undoing the 4 bolts. The bearing is held on by tolerance fit, and a retainer ring. To remove, take a grinder and almost grind through the retainer ring on both sides. Then take a hammer and chisel and break the ring at the flats. The old bearing should move with the aid of the chisel as a lever between it and the brake backing plate. Reassembly is where you need a few specialty tools. Either a press, or a heated oil bath. The correct procedure is to press the bearing on, after the oil seal, then heat the retainer ring until it is about 140 deg C. The ring then fits onto the axle and is fitted against the bearing. Alternately, you can use the press to fit the ring.

Did the rear wheel bearings last year on my 4track....David/Bundy is correct when he says its a bit of a pain..but only if you are intending to do the whole job yourself. I removed the rear half shafts myself using a home made puller..easy job...ground of the retainer rings and removed bearings as advised by David.....then I took the shafts to a small local engineering shop and they fitted new bearings and pressed on the retainer rings...refitted the shafts..rebuilt the brakes...job done...cost for both sides was £40

For an easier way to remove the rear axle, once you have removed the brake drum, reverse it on the wheel studs, and tighten the nuts up again. You can then apply a bit of gently persuasion to the brake drum with a hammer. Hit it evenly round the circumference of the drum.

hi all got the wheel bearing sorted and no more nasty noise, but the wheel on the side it was fitted seems to heat up quite a bit the brakes cont seem to be rubbing and im at a loss as to what is causing it it will have to come apart again i guess .also all the rear lights have failed the brake lights kept blowing fuses so traced a short and repaired plus a new brakelight switch and every thing seemed ok ,then no lights atall Unknw i hate eletrics any ideas .thanks again for all your input i will post some pics of my beauty soon clean and as dirty as i can get her .cheers gaz

It could also be the exhaust pipe touching the body under load - also noticeable when the engine is shut down. This is usually a problem when a non OEM exhaust system is installed

problem solved the bearing had gone into self destruct got it sirted £75 im pleased with that now the brake lights have died but not to worry i think im gonna be able to sort it .cheers people ,Gaz
