My Hijet keeps cutting out need help!!!!

Forum:

Hi
I have a k reg 998 hijet, the problem is it keeps cutting out (like running outa petrol), have replaced all the fillters, cleaned the tank, (& gause), cleaned injectors, and carb. and the problem is still there, have checked with main dealer, and there about as much use as a chocolate teapot.
ok here,s what happens
1. starts great runs a mile or so, then stutters to a stop, switch of ing, wait 1 or 2 min,s and it starts up first time runs sweet as a nut for about a mile then same thing, switch ing off again and starts up fine then same thing , some times runs about a mile sometimes can be a few hundred yards,
if it were not injection i would say replace the condencer? but as the are no points, dont know if it has one??
has anybody had this problem? and what did you do to sort it out, at the moment the van is unreliable, never used to do it it just started to do it comming back from chester to manchester one day and has decided that it is gonna keep on doing it, really like my van so want to get it sorted, so any comments welcome,
oh just one other thing i forgot to mention the hijet will happly tick over all day long and not cut out , only seems to happen when driving
thanks steven

Hey Steve, I had exactly the

Hey Steve,

I had exactly the same problem with my 1991, im not sure
tho if what i did helps......because mine is injection...
but there is a pipe along the left on the motor, small and
ver minute which has air traveling through it. and when the engine moves madly it use to fall off and the jeep would stall, wait 1 - 2 minutes, and pow it started back up first time!! and i made the tick over a bit higher......

Common problem...

Have you checked that your petrol tank is venting properly? Hi-Jet petrol tanks have been known to create a vaccuum which then starves the engine of fuel. This usually happens after the engine has been running awhile.

vaccuum comment

hi
I thought that there had to be a vaccuum in the tank?, do know when the lock is taken off there is a whoosh of air, but it has always done this (even when running correctly) got me wondering if i put the pipes on correctly when i put the tank back after cleaning, had another comment on a small pipe on the block that comes off will check them both out in the daylight tommorow, with regards to the small pipe (and my eng is injection) where abouts is it?
thanks
steven,
I have also recived a call from the main dealers who said it could be the coil breaking down under load, any thoughts on that Unknw
thanks again

hi jet

have just found out that my hi jet is the carb model NOT EFI model (only found that out whilst searching for a coil loads of efi injection coils but no carb model ones)
so i,m back to sq 1,
tank checked out ok, as did fuel lines, replaced fillter again,so thats clean, but its still doing that silly cut out thing, anybody out there got a spare coil they wanna sell? needs to be off a carb model, has 4 or 5 wires comming out of the plug not 2 like the injection type.
thanks

Cutting out

Hi Steve
I have been working on my EFI hijet and I found the same problem you describe. After hours of searching I court my hand on an earth wire, and the engine stopped dead.
On the EFI engine the management system takes its earth from the top of the engine and the side (through a braid)
Try following the earth wires down to the retaining screw look for corrosion or loose fixings

No Luck

hi no luck as yet as i said bought a new hijet will swop parts 1 at a time to find what cures problem, could do with a workshop manual for a 92/94 petrol 978cc carb eng hijet,if anybodys got one out there???,will definatly get to the bottom of the problem and post the answer as soon as i find out , stating with replacing the coil, then dizzy (if the coil dont work) then its a case of 1 item at a time till the problem goes away (know everything on other van ok as drove it back (and it dont cut out) but knocking its Bo**5^Ks off (think its the cam, but havin looked at it could be a sticking vale or just need the valves setting, any body out there know the settings for the 3 cyl eng valves inlet & outlet ,let me know
cheers

Update

hi well here,s the update
replaced coil, still got problem.
replaced full dizzy, still got problem
will replace tank and everything else that is onit l8ter on in the week
hope that that cures the problem, if it dont gonna have to start with all the sensers i can find,
tell u what this is begining to be one hell of a problem to sort out, only thing i,ve got going for me is the spare van i bought did,nt have the problem SO by changing all the components i should be able to get to the bottom of what is causing it, wish me luck, will keep u all informed of progress and lets hope i can find the problem and post a cure for it
thanks again
steven

UPDATE2
have changed the tank and it has i think solved the problem, so deducting the tak itself the fault must lie with the sender unit that fits into the tank, the one i changed it with had a earth strap whic i fixed to a newly cleaned part of the body, cannot belive that it was that simple but would seem it was, so if you have the same prob try attachin a new earth strap, with any luck it sould solve the problem, if you try this and it works let me know
thanks to all who offerd solutions
steven

re:update2

I have the same problem as yours, mine is an efi. I've change the labmda, test the cts, ats, bypass the relay so the pump is running continouos to make certain the pump wasnt intermittent, change the coil and module, disconnect the airvalves red one and the blue one, check dissi coil change sparkplugs, these are fun to get out.water pressure is ok so I dont think its gasket plus if it was gasket it should still start first time. replace exhaust. cat was partially blocked. the only think I havent change is the MAP but did put an oscilloscope on it to see if it was working. The onlything I cant do at the moment is check the timing since I cant see the timing mark but trying to start it I get the impression that the timing is out, it's starting to backfire when I try starting it. regarding the tank earthing I will look into that because I notice the fuel gauge wasnt working a couple of weeks ago but its working now, but it did start when the fuel gauge wasnt working. did I mention I change the ECU as well? The next option is to install an lpg kit on it and see if it will run with that. I think the solinouds are getting voltage since both relays open when the ignition swicth is turn on. I did put the scope on it but thats while it was running. This is so weird. if its petrol then it should fire up with some easy start but even that doesn't work Sad I need some Help as to what to do next. At least I have 2 option. (1)lpg which I was going to do anyway but want to get it through the MOT first (2) put a 1.3 engine in and still LPG it. (3) scrap it (4) sell it as spare and repairs. Dont want to do 3-4 but those are my last options and I dont want the wife to say I told you so

Second update for those interested

ok, as stated before have changed tank (and all the other gubbins on the top)and the problem has gone away, great!!!, so would think it had somthing to do with the electrics on the top of the tank, cos the tank i had was cleaned out (via steam) dry as a bone when put back, fillters replaced etc etc. and i still had the cutting out problem , replaced the whole gubbins(with old tank etc) and its gone?, so culprits are ,sender unit?, fillter (internal) fillter (external) not sure if there is a elec petrol pump some where in there, but if there is it,s well hidden, anybody got any ideas as to what could have gone faulty in this unit?, let me know, (blockage is not poss as everything including the mesh fillter in the tank has been well cleaned)
thanks
steven
ps, anybody got a manual for the carb, ver 987cc hijet (NOT INJECTION)let me know

thanks
steven

PETROL STARVATION

Well done for sorting that problem. Some modern sender units have the pump attached within the tank with a filter on that. I'm not saying that was the problem with yout Hijet but it sounds likely. I was quite amazed to find a pump built into a Metro tank having searched for the usual external unit.

Just a further possibility.

HiJet Cutting out

Had a similar problem, whilst the vehicle was under waranty, the dealers tried: Valve clearances and changed the MAFF sensor which did not help the problem, and then they changed the EGR Valve and that cured it, apparently one or two hijets have had this problem.

Hope this helps

By the way a fault on the petrol system is usually worse when running on LPG - or so I have found!

hijet keeps cutting out

I have the same problem:
(hijet 1300 efi petrol)

- when cold: starting and running fine.
(apart from a nasty squeek, but irrelevant in this matter I expect)
- after short ride: cutting out while shifting gear!
- sometimes in combination with, what seems to be, an electrical problem.
- all occurred after draining battery by leaving lights on AND kept occurring after replacing battery with new one.

action:
I will check and clean all electrical grounds and fuses I can find, then I will inform you.

We have same prob but intermitent - ours is 1.3i engine

Hi all, we have the same cutting out but ours is only when crusing at 55-60mph. Hasnt done it since we did the earth check thing so hopefully its cured.
Someone asked ...what does EGR valve do?
Well its an electronic valve that allows some recurclation of unburnt fuel in the exhaust gasses, very expensive new but about £45-50 quid off a yard.

Hope that helps.

P.S. Turns out its not the earth thing in ours as my Mrs said it cut out again this morning, luckily we're so used to it she just turns the ignition off and straight back on, the engine instantly refires and we're ok.

ABSOLUTE LASTLY!!!
