identifying a fourtrak diesel engine :help:

Forum:

Hi
I'm trying to identify a fourtrak engine fitted to my landrover i can purchase the correct engine parts, apparently there are about four versions of this engine, the dealers say that it can't be identified from the engine number but only from the regitration number of the original vehicle, but perhaps there are other identifying features? all I know is that it is a non-turbo diesel from the fourtrak. One crucial piece of information needed is the sump capacity.
Hope someone can help.

Is there a sticker on the

Is there a sticker on the rocker cover saying DG or DL5 'something'?
Do the injecter pipes come out of the top of the Diesel pump in a straight line, or out of the back in a circle?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

further Info

Hi
Yes there is a sticker on the rocker cover with the letters DG and giving the valve clearances intake 25mm outlet 25mm and the injection timing 17" BTDC.

The injector pipe come out of the top of the diesel pump in a line.

Then it SHOULD be an early

Then it SHOULD be an early DG 2.5 litre motor. Out of a pre 1984 Scat/Wildcat (I think they were also called) I say should, because we assume here that the tappet cover hasnt been changed over. But, I dont even know if they are interchangeable between the DG and the DL motors.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the information.
It's quite an old engine then, I'll need to conider if it's worth keeping it as it needs a few part such rear oil seal ring gear and starter motor, it does run very nicely in the landrover though it is having trouble starting.
Do you know would a later fourtrak engine (2.8 tdi) be a direct replacement? if so then the I may consider that upgrade.
One more thing do you know what the sump capacity i for thi engine a I've lost the dipstick and I'm losing a lot of oil from the rear oil seal?

The in line injector pipes

The in line injector pipes give it away. It is the 2.5 Diesel, from the F50 (pre-fourtak).
The 2.8 is basicly the same engine, with a slightly longer stroke. It will bolt straight in. However I would advise against putting a normaly asperated 2.8 in, as they are not as good as the 2.5. If your going to upgrade find a terbo modle. The only mods you need to make to get it in are to redesign the exhoust slightly and run an ignition wire for the electroninly opperates fuel lift pump (terbo or non).
You may also have to swap the 2.8 engine mounts for the 2.5 to make it sit right, but they just bolt to the block anyway.
