Fuel economy and poor running

Forum:

My sporty is terrible when cold and i have read the discussion on the auto choke so i will change my thermostat and see if this cures it not going off properly. But the poor wee thing is only getting 25 to the gallon and my pockets being Scottish are not lined with gold. Ive changed plugs distributer cap leads oil new clutch etc etc etc but i realy need suggestions to poor running when cold. also need a clock and a cig lighter if anyone can oblige. also i have a line on good looking bull bars from a wee engineer i know for £200.00 new if their is an interest

Thanks

After the first few weeks of ownership, I was actually grubbing around under the rear end looking for leaks. They are fairly woeful around town whatever - BUT I did improve it back to stated figures by giving it a thundering great service (they seem to be very sensitive to filters and the like) and timed it all up. It'll never be very frugal, but they are easy enough to keep on top of.

TIP - I changed all the diff., T/fer and gearbox oils recently to an Butler fuels EPA 80 with Slick 50 additive. Seems to coast a bit better which means less transmission 'drag' (and has quietened the whine.)

I'd agree with Dave here with the oil replacement for diffs and gearboxes, it's often overlooked. In my previous Suzuki's it made a dramatic difference to their running and economy.

Fuel economy

As far as fuel economy goes, is it my imagination or does anybody else seem to get better mpg when using ordinary Shell/Texaco etc. unleaded compared to supermarket petrol? Also, the Daily Telegraph's motoring correspondant always advises people to use Shell/Texaco petrol rather than supermarket petrol because there's a far higher detergent content in it, which means a much cleaner fuel system.

I think my Fourtrak runs smoother and quieter on Shell Diesel Extra, and maybe a bit more economical compared to other fuels, but it could just be in my mind as I couldn't really test it like for like except on a rolling road.
