Gear box filler

Forum:

I need to check the gear box oil on my 98 Fourtrak but can't remember which side the filler is on! and dont want to get it wrong can someone please remind me Smile
(and then transfer one too)
Thanks

Assuming the later models

Assuming the later models are the same as the earlier ones, its on the right hand side, as viewed from the rear towards the front, or in other words, on the drivers side in a RHD vehicle. The one on the left hand side SHOULD have an aluminium lock washer under it. The transfer case is on the same side, on the front edge of the casing.

no 2nd nut on my f78

hi i didnt reply as my f78 unlike my old f75 has only the right hand nut not sure but it seems some f78's have both and some just the one. as for the manual theres one on ebay at the moment for up to a f75 which is the same engine wise only the suspension would be different if thats any use but a bit pricey i expect come the end of the auction.

Only the one nut on my 98

Only the one nut on my 98 one, so I had no problem, nice and easy Smile

Cheating on the fill

Instead of crawling underneath to fill your gearbox, CHEAT.
Drain the gearbox as normal; measure out the correct amount of oil, depending on the model.
Inside the vehicle, remove the gearstick rubber, using a pair of circlip pliers remove the gearstick circlip and lift out the gearstick, pour the oil in the gearstick hole.

No more filling through awkward holes, trying to squeeze plastic filler bottles, and spillage when you overfill it.

Removing and replacing the gearstick is even quicker than removing and replacing the gearbox filler bung.
